Did you see the red sun last evening. According to Idaho News 2, this prolonged smoky haze from wildfires smoke filters out shorter wavelengths of light, leaving mostly red and orange wavelengths to shine through and be seen by the naked human eye.

The Art & Wine Festival is the largest fundraiser of the year for HART for Animals and the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) and many volunteers will be needed. Volunteer tasks will be set-up, wine pouring, security, silent auction, tear-down, and staffing the front gate, wine store, and information areas. Volunteers will receive free non-tasting admission and a festival t-shirt, or have the option to purchase a tasting ticket at a discounted price.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is seeking comments on proposed fishing regulations and penalty systems. Comments provide the department with additional information and perspectives.

The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area’s Mini-Grant Program is now accepting applications. The mini-grant program is a one-to-one cash or in-kind matching grant for up to $3,000.00 designed to provide funding for non-capital projects including innovative exhibits, tours, events, planning and projects which build upon interpretive themes identified in the Heritage Area’s Management Plan.
The third of four Deep Creek Lake hydrilla herbicide treatments is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Tuesday, July 20. A map showing the treatment locations as red polygons can be seen below:

The Deep Creek Lake Lion’s Club is holding its annual blind camper week. During the summer, the club sets up tents for the students at Deep Creek Lake State Park, where they spend the days tubing on the lake and the nights roasting marshmallows by the fire. Local attractions also donate their facilities to allow the students to experience the fun of the mountain coaster, bumper cars, and go-carts.

The Red Cross needs donors now — a blood shortage continues and a thousand blood donations are needed daily to prevent further delays in patient care.
The next collection in Garrett County is today in Oakland from 12:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley Community Center at 975 Joni Miller Road. Also, an upcoming drive is in Accident on 7/19/2021 from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Garrett College Career & Technology Training Center at 116 Industrial Park Drive.

At a meeting of the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA), the authority voted by unanimous vote to expand the Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West (MMGTW) Heritage Areas boundary to include the property of 1249 Bumble Bee Road. This parcel, owned by the Garrett County Government, is managed and maintained by the Deep Creek Lake Lions Club (DCLLC) and hosts a ball field, pavilion, dog park, ten miles of trails, and historical and art exhibits honoring the life of Garrett County’s first frontiersman, Meshach Browning.
Garrett County’s Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage area was awarded $168,483.00 in grants for the fiscal year 2022. By supporting capital projects and educational activities, the grants spark renewed interest in Maryland culture from residents and visitors, boosting tourism-related jobs.

Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Recent electrofishing surveys recently took place at Deep Creek Lake and Broadford Lake. Both showed healthy populations of fish, and Deep Creek Lake showed an excellent population of trophy-sized bluegills and largemouth bass. A standout at Broadford Lake was the population of large crappie waiting for anglers.
A reminder that all local lakes are monitored for water quality by the Garrett County Health Department. If the E. coli count is above the threshold recommended by the US EPA, then a swim advisory will be posted on the beach. See current advisories at the state website.

From the Garrett County Sheriff’s Department: on July 5, 2021, deputies recovered a plastic tool chest containing various power tools and other miscellaneous tools in Mountain Lake Park. The owner can contact Captain Zimmerman at the Sheriff’s Office at 301-334-1911, to claim ownership and provide a description of the tools.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is now recruiting members for the Maryland Conservation Corps, an award-winning AmeriCorps program that engages young adults aged 17-25 in extensive conservation, environmental and natural resources management projects across the state. The department seeks to hire 35 full-time members who will work on seven teams for an 11-month period, beginning in late September 2021.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources wants to impress upon boaters and lake users the importance of CLEANING, DRAINING and DRYING boats and gear that move from one body of water to another.
Anglers at Deep Creek Lake will be experiencing full summer vacation mode, so watch out for boat and jet ski traffic. The best fishing opportunities will be in the early morning hours and to a lesser extent late in the evening for a mix of species. A wacky-rigged stick worm or soft plastic flipped under a floating dock or moored boat is a good tactic to entice a loafing bass to pick up a bait.
