There is a Notice of Investigation issued by the MD State Fire Marshal — on August 2, 2019 there was a fire on Swanton Road. The primary cause is determined to be arson. Anyone with information is requested to contact the State Fire Marshal’s Office at 301-766-3888.

I had a chance to visit the Garrett County Agriculture Fair last night! So much fun!
The fair continues tonight and tomorrow! Today is a pee wee swine show, the engineering and skill-a-thon awards, cow patty bingo, mud bog and performance by Tyler Reese Tritt. Tomorrow is the wood cutting contest, the Kickin It Country, John Wyrick Band, and Gospel Harmony Boys. And, much more — here’s the full schedule.

My wife Jean and her Civic Club buddies were working the Rotary Fries booth last evening and posed for this action photo (l to r – Joan, Jean, Judi and Marilyn). While it was rainy, they had fun while volunteering for a good cause. Now I am hungry for some of those great fries!

Speaking of the fair, I drive by the Garrett County fairgrounds a few times a day and it seems from the full parking lot that attendance is booming this year. Wednesday evening rain aside, I think the weather has definitely been cooperating in getting people out to the fair.
Today’s events at the Fair include a pedal tractor pull, beef showmanship, the truck drag race, and Restless Heart for the evening entertainment. Admission price is $15 for all rides, attractions and track events. View the Full Fair Schedule Here.
The Women’s Networking Happy Hour is today from 5:00pm-7pm at Black Bear Tavern.
A new grant award from the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) will 100%-fund the construction of eight corporate hangars at the Garrett County Airport. This is good news as the airport is important to local citizens and businesses and it had run out of hangar space.
It’s not too late to get yourself, your child or your grandchild enrolled and registered at Garrett College. The Fall Semester starts in early September and they have New Student Advising Days scheduled for August 7th and 16th, with a week set aside for last-minute walk-ins set through August 30th. Still plenty of financial aid available as well. Call the admissions department at 301.387.3044 for more information and to get started.

The Chamber of Commerce has announced that organizations wanting to participate in the 52nd Annual Autumn Glory Grand Feature Parade must submit their applications to the Chamber by Friday, September 6, 2019. The Deep Creek Watershed Foundation is auctioning off a FLYING SCOT #16 that was graciously donated to the Foundation by the family of the late General Joseph P. Here’s an article on education and our Maryland neighbor to the East, Allegany County — A research team discovered the school system in Maryland with the greatest number of high-poverty elementary schools beating the odds in math. I don’t have the stats in front of me but Garrett County schools are also excellent-performing rural schools with a significant population of students in need of free or reduced lunch.

This group is run by a friend of mine where he is always posting about group rides or paddles with the location, the difficulty, the time, and how long the event may take. He always says, “there’s always something to do in these hills!”

Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has started repairs on U.S. 50. Currently, there is a detour in place as the road had washed away in late June due to high waters. The repairs are estimated to be completed by August 2, 2019.
