After 10 years, John & Kim Orendorf and family will be taking over Brenneman’s Store. Now known as Country Roads General Store the store will be open 11am-9pm and closed on Sundays.

Western Maryland Health System is opening an urgent care location in the previous Mountaineer Log & Siding building in McHenry called Advanced Lakeside Medical Care. It will be open 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Vagabond Taproom is located on Alder Street in Downtown Oakland and will a unique menu of light refreshments and, of course, local beverages on tap. Look for pint glass drop-off locations, leave a destination themed pint glass, and get a token towards your first pint with Vagabond’s pint-for-a-pint program.


The stoplight has been removed and a 4-way stop built in it’s place on Second Street in downtown Oakland. The State Highway determined that the poles were not stable enough to continue to support the cables/lights/etc and it was a hazard. New poles have been ordered but it may take a few weeks.

WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) is a federally funded program which provides nutritious foods, health screening, nutrition counseling and referrals to eligible pregnant women, postpartum women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to age five.

Alex Anderson & Anthony Lascaris have been working at Deep Creek Lake for over 10 years and have always had a passion for outdoor activities. They grew up having fun at the lake and want to make sure others enjoy their time as well so they have started Deep Creek Water Trampoline rentals.

Eye for Art Gallery & Studio has reopened at the Spruce Forest Artisan Village for the Summer 2019 season. The studio will offer unique Art classes for all ages and abilities including painting, photography, drawing, jewelry making, ceramics, and more.

Slopeside Market (a gas station located along Route 219 in McHenry) now has a new Lottery machine. You can purchase any game from this machine, including Mega and Powerball.

The Rooster’s Nest is now open at 12336 National Pike in Grantsville, Maryland 21536. Offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner with daily specials. There is a bar and lounge area and food is also available to-go!


The new watering stations are in at the Oakland Dog Park. Your dog can use the lower fountain or bring your own bowl and fill it up.

After more than 29  years at Deep Creek Lake, Smiley’s Bar and Grill and Fun Zone has been sold to Tack Spiker. Smile’ys has two gocart tracks, lazer tag, mini-golf, an assortment of arcade games and the famous Brew City cheese fries! Smiley’s Restaurant and the new Deep Creek Fun Zone will be reopened in mid-May.

We just heard from Jamie and Rayetta of Deep Creek Catering; they have recently purchased the Jubilee restaurant in Friendsville. With their planned opening towards the end of this month, they will continue to offer offsite catering for weddings, and large corporate events and will also be reopening the Jubilee restaurant.

A community light display is on now through December 31, 2018; from 5-11:30 pm each night.
I just heard that the Dairy Queen in Oakland will be closing for a few days for renovations. It looks like they will be closing Sunday December 9 at 6:00 pm and reopening on the 14th of December. Better get your Blizzard “fix” before they start their renovations

The Humble Produce Stand is open for business! Located at 6936 Sang Run Road, McHenry, MD 21541 this stand is privately run and offers “Take what you need, leave what you can” produce. This week there is zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers, hot banana peppers and salad tomatoes.


Thanks to the Western Maryland Singletrack Initiative, there is a new mountain bike trail at Deep Creek Lake State Park. For now, the trail is marked with blue tree flags. The first new segment spans the south face of Meadow Mtn connecting into Indian Turnip by the bridge to East and in the CCW switchback near the Mine to the West. Definitely has a different feel! Some steeper grades, tighter switchbacks, and a good bit of rock. Should be extra popular with walkers as it shaves over a mile from the current Turnip Loop to the top of the mtn.

Cornucopia Cafe shared that they will soon have a Grantsville Info Center next door to the Little Crossings Pantry! Originally from Deep Creek Lake, Grantsville is giving the building a new and cozy home just steps from the Cafe.

A railroad coal car has been delivered to the Oakland B&O Train Station. A new steam engine will be part of the display soon.
