Garrett County Community Action announces 2026 dates for its popular Homeownership Education & Finance Class. The free workshops cover every essential step of the homebuying process, from selecting a realtor, identifying insurance, and navigating financing, with topics such as credit analysis, lender underwriting criteria, and much more, all designed to equip future homeowners with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. Scheduled workshops are February 2 & 23, April 6 & 20, June 1 & 15, August 3 & 10, and October 5 & 19. All sessions begin at 1:00 PM for approximately three hours each at Community Action's Oakland offices, led by Nick Fratz-Orr of Railey Realty, Amanda Lewis of Healy Insurance Group, and April Jones of First United Bank & Trust. Attendance at both classes is required to earn HUD-approved Home Buyer Certification, which qualifies the prospective buyer for Garrett County government's Pathway to Homeownership grant for up to $6,875 toward down-payment or closing costs, valid for 5 years. Occurring on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Grantsville branch, representatives from the Garrett County Department of Social Services will be in the library to serve the community through their assistance outreach program. Customers can come see a DSS staff person at any of these locations to pick up paperwork, drop off paperwork, apply for services like SNAP, CASH Assistance, and Medical Assistance, or just to ask questions about the programs and services offered by our agency. Staff can also provide a referral to other community agencies if we do not have a program to address the person’s needs. ANYONE can access ANY of these locations. This schedule provides flexibility to our customers who may be working in communities away from their home or who may be facing transportation challenges. These locations also provide support to our customers by making DSS forms available to customers during the location’s open hours of business. Customers can look for the file box labeled “DSS FORMS” to pick up forms, information, or a pre-paid envelope in which to return completed forms to our office for processing.
