Nourishing Neighbors
Broadford Lake Park Mountain Lake Park, MD, United StatesThe 2026 Nourishing Neighbors program kicked off in July with its free fresh produce distribution and resource exchange. FCS educator Kenzi Mousch shared valuable tips on selecting and using the proper kitchen equipment, including which knives work best for cutting specific food items. Participants gained practical skills to enhance their cooking experience and had the chance to sample a delicious crunchy vegetable wrap made from vegetables included in the produce boxes! Make an Empty Bowl to Fight Hunger — Group Pottery Sessions at Deep Creek Pottery
Deep Creek Pottery 1550 Deep Creek Drive (back side of The Fort), McHenry, MD, United StatesLooking for a fun group activity that also helps the community? Deep Creek Pottery invites you to gather your friends, coworkers, or club and make an empty bowl to help fight hunger in Garrett County. Gather a group of at least 6 people. Cost is $10-$15 per person. Set up a time that works for your group, and bring snacks and wine if you'd like. Make a bowl using pinch, coil, or slab techniques under the guidance of a skilled potter -- or paint an already-fired bowl with help from the instructor. Your bowls will be fired, finished, and donated to the Empty Bowls Dinner this fall, which raises funds to fight food insecurity in Garrett County. Go home knowing your group did something good for the community while having fun together. The Empty Bowls Dinner will be held on September 20, 2026, at Wisp Resort for the benefit of Garrett County Community Action Food Security Programs. Garrett County Department of Social Services Assistance Program
Ruth Enlow Library - Grantsville 102 Parkside Drive, Grantsville, MarylandOccurring on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Grantsville branch, representatives from the Garrett County Department of Social Services will be in the library to serve the community through their assistance outreach program. Customers can come see a DSS staff person at any of these locations to pick up paperwork, drop off paperwork, apply for services like SNAP, CASH Assistance and Medical Assistance, or just to ask questions about the programs and services offered by our agency. Staff can also provide a referral to other community agencies if we do not have a program to address the person’s needs. ANYONE can access ANY of these locations. This schedule provides flexibility to our customers who may be working in communities away from their home or who may be facing transportation challenges. These locations also provide support to our customers by making DSS forms available to customers during the location’s open hours of business. Customers can look for the file box labeled “DSS FORMS” to pick up forms, information, or a pre-paid envelope in which to return completed forms to our office for processing.
