Garrett County Public Schools has voted on an increase in substitute teacher pay for the 2021-2022 school year.

Also, the food and nutrition services department from the public schools will resume offering free meals beginning today at several locations throughout the county. Any child, 18 and under, is eligible.

Garrett College is holding a silent auction today from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. All proceeds benefit the Dove Center.

Junior deer hunt days are this weekend in all Maryland counties on November 13. The is also open on Sunday, November 14 on private land in all counties except Baltimore, Howard, and Prince George’s. Also, on November 14, junior hunters in Allegany, Cecil, Garrett, St. Mary’s, and Washington counties may hunt on designated public lands.

Trout anglers continue to enjoy the rewards of the trout stocking that took place in October. There is plenty of trout out there, especially in the many small ponds that were stocked at the end of October. A list of these areas can be found on the DNR website.

Thursday November 4

The weather today will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 43 and a low around 24. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 7 mph.

I thought this photo is a neat perspective of a frosty leaf imprint on my car windshield! I’m not so happy that it’s cold enough to frost, though!

Anglers at Deep Creek Lake are seeing the coldwater fishery there jumping to life. Northern pike are active in the open cove areas, walleye are approaching steep rocky shores in the evenings, and yellow perch can be found along deep grass edges.

The next Business Before Hours will be held at 8 am on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 in the Crawford Room at Wisp Resort. The event will feature Tom Riford and Liz Fitzsimmons, from the Maryland Department of Commerce, who will be providing an update on the state’s strategies for promoting tourism. The Garrett County Health Department is making plans for the administration of COVID-19 vaccines to 5-11-year-olds. Clinics specifically for this age group will be scheduled the week of November 15th in Oakland and on the Northern End of the County.

There is a petition circulating to “Save Rocky Gap” State Park from privatization. Their site reads: “On October 6, 2021, the Task Force on the Economic Future of Western Maryland, co-chaired by State Senator George Edwards and Delegate Jason Buckel, recommended that “land within Rocky Gap State Park…could be developed by private businesses.”

Dinner and discussion continues at Oakland Church of the Nazarene on Wednesdays 5:30 pm-7 pm. Upcoming theme nights are November 10 – “Where’s the Beef?”, November 17 – “Thanksgiving Dinner”, and on November 24 there will not be a Gathering Event.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources encourages experienced deer hunters to take advantage of the upcoming Junior Deer Hunting Days to introduce youth to this time-honored cultural and sporting tradition. The Junior Deer Hunt is open on private and designated public land in all counties on November 13 and also open on Sunday, November 14 on private land in some counties and on public land in Garrett County.

The Southern Garrett Marching Band attended the Atlantic Coast Championships held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on October 31, 2021. The marching band finished in 4th place out of the top 18 bands in Class 1A with a score of 93.88!

The weather for the month of October was monitored by Garrett Regional Medical Center — the high-temperature average was 68.8 degrees and the low-temperature average was 48.8 degrees. They also reported 4.1 inches of precipitation (rain) over the course of the month.

Garrett County County Public Schools (GCPS) in collaboration with the Garrett County Health Department (GCHD) and Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) are offering free COVID-19 vaccination clinics for children 12 – 15 years old at Southern Middle School on November 1, 2021, and Northern Middle School on November 3, 2021. Students,12 – 15 years old, who obtain their full vaccinations through these special clinics are eligible to receive a free $25 gift card.

Remember daylight savings time sets the clocks back at 2am on Sunday, November 7.

A regulatory proposal for fishing in nontidal waters has been printed in the Maryland Register. The Maryland DNR is seeking comments on the changes to the fishing regulations by 11:59 p.m. November 22, 2021.

October is perhaps one of the best months to fish Deep Creek Lake. Many of the species that prefer colder water are very active this month. Yellow perch, smallmouth bass and walleye can be found along the deep edges of grass lines and along steep rocky shores – which is also a great place to find walleye in the evening hours by casting small crankbaits and jerkbaits. Northern pike are very active at the mouths of many cove areas, while smallmouth bass can be found near rocky points and sunken wood.

The last Mountain Fresh Farmers Market of the season will be held tomorrow 10:00 am – 1:00 pm in the mountain fresh pavilion in Oakland.

Today at 1:00 pm is the Beckman’s Bear Hike and Saturday at 10:00 am is an Aviary Tour and at 2:00 pm is Shellfies, on Sunday at 9:00 am is a Bird Walk and at 2:00 pm is a Reptile Encounter — all at the Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake.

The weather today will be a slight chance of showers after 2pm. Patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 57 and low around 45. Southeast wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

As reported by the Maryland Natural Resources, the black bear harvest total is at 38 at the end of day 3.

Planning continues for Garrett County’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. On Monday, December 6, 2021 a kick-off celebration will be held at the Garrett County Courthouse. This launch event will be a preview of the upcoming year-long plans with light refreshments to be served.
