Ahead of Hurricane Helene, the drought conditions map for Maryland has been updated.

Hurricane Helene made landfall along the Florida Panhandle last (Thursday) evening. After landfall, the official track has Helene moving N and then NW up through Georgia/Alabama and moving into the southern Appalachian region through early Friday. The forecasts then have the quickly dissipating system then banking westward into the Tennessee and central/lower Ohio River Valleys over the weekend.

A weak remnant low may then track eastward over the Mid Atlantic late Sunday into Monday. Rainfall chances from the remnants of Helene are minimal to light, at this point, with isolated instances of 1-2 inches in Western and Central MD midday to later Friday. Some lingering unsettled weather is expected into Monday.

As of September 26, fall foliage in Annapolis is slow to emerge due to summer droughts, with leaves turning yellow and brown. Western Maryland is at a quiet mid-point, with falling leaves providing habitat for wildlife. The Eastern Shore near Assateague Island shows minimal color change, with some dogwoods, sweetgums, and maples starting to shift. For fall activities, see this week’s Recreational Spotlight!

The final report for the Deep Creek Lake Arrowhead Cove Pilot Dredging Project is now available online.
