As of March 13, Maryland Department of Natural Resources crews stocked 4,860 trout. In Garrett County, rainbow trout were stocked in the North Branch Potomac River (delayed harvest).

The Maryland Department of Planning has released its 2025 Statewide Generalized Zoning data, created with input from Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City. The Garrett County Board of Education is accepting applications from county residents interested in serving on the volunteer Garrett County Board of Education Ethics Panel. The weather today will be mostly cloudy. A chance of snow this morning. Little or no snow accumulation. Much cooler, with highs in the mid 30s. Northwest winds of around 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. The chance of snow is 50%.

As of March 11, Maryland Department of Natural Resources crews stocked 6,690 trout. In Garrett County, golden and rainbow trout were stocked at Herrington Lake and along the North Branch Potomac River in Kitzmiller.

During the March Board meeting, new curricula for Elementary English Language Arts and Grades 6–8 Science were approved following a public review period from February 11 to March 4, 2026. The programs will be implemented district-wide beginning in the 2026–27 school year. During the same meeting, Mrs. Dawna Ashby was named the next Chief Academic Officer for Garrett County Public Schools, effective July 1, 2026. She currently serves as Director of Early Childhood and Elementary Education and will succeed Dr. Nicole Miller.

As of March 10, crews from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources stocked 10,510 trout across the state. In Garrett County, stockings included golden and rainbow trout at Broadford Lake, golden and rainbow trout at Glades Park Pond (youth and blind), golden and rainbow trout at Savage River Reservoir, and rainbow trout in the Youghiogheny River (catch and release).

Garrett County Community Action’s VITA program is offering free tax preparation and filing through April 9 for eligible households. No appointment is needed. Services are available at the Mary Browning Senior Center in Oakland and the Grantsville Senior Center during open hours.

The Environmental Health Services Unit of the Garrett County Health Department reminds property owners not connected to public sewer systems to maintain their septic systems. Septic tanks should generally be pumped every three to five years to prevent drainfield clogs, backups, and costly repairs.

A recent survey found many Marylanders routinely ignore common eye symptoms, including dry eyes, light sensitivity, and difficulty reading small text. The study also shows 54% are more likely to ignore eye pain than tooth pain, and 76% believe declining eyesight is inevitable, which may lead people to delay eye exams. Check out the full report.

As of March 4, Maryland Department of Natural Resources crews stocked 7,340 trout.

Applications are now open for the FY 2026 Maryland Historic Preservation Capital Grant Program. Grants of up to $100,000 are available for eligible projects, with a required dollar-for-dollar match for all applicants except nonprofits. The application deadline is March 16, 2026.

Savage Highlands State Park is expected to open in late summer 2026. Located in Garrett County and surrounded by nearly 700 acres of Savage River State Forest and the Mount Aetna Tract, the 40-acre park will offer new opportunities for outdoor recreation. The park remains closed while upgrades to existing structures are completed, with an anticipated opening in late August 2026, pending progress.
