WVJC School of Nursing Joins WVU Medicine’s Aspiring Nurse Program at Garrett Regional Medical Center and Potomac Valley Hospital

WVJC School of Nursing is excited to announce additional educational partnerships in WVU Medicine’s Aspiring Nurse Program at Garrett Regional Medical Center in Oakland, Maryland, and Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser, West Virginia. This partnership offers area student nurses financial support, with up to $25,000 available to eligible students, mentorship within the WVU Medicine network, and the opportunity for employment at the selected hospital upon graduation from the WVJC School of Nursing program.

WVU Medicine developed the Aspiring Nurse Program in 2023 to support full-time nursing students and encourage nursing retention in West Virginia. Students receive funding throughout the program, including a sign-on bonus and funding over four semesters, to use for school or life expenses at the student’s discretion. In exchange, nursing graduates in the program will interview for a bedside nurse position at the WVU Medicine facility contracted within their agreement and, once hired, complete a three-year work commitment.

WVJC School of Nursing is an Aspiring Nurse Educational Partner at 12 WVU Medicine facilities across the region. “We believe one of the most important ways to address the nursing workforce shortage is by bringing healthcare providers and educational institutions together with a shared commitment to preparing the next generation of nurses,” said Adam Pratt, WVJC’s WVU Medicine Aspiring Nurse Program Liaison.

“By supporting students throughout their nursing journey, the program helps remove barriers, strengthen their path to graduation, and create a pipeline of well-prepared nurses for West Virginia communities,” Pratt continued.

The partnership between WVJC School of Nursing and WVU Medicine prepares student nurses to integrate into workplace culture, making the transition to employment smoother after graduation and passing the NCLEX-RN* licensure exam.

Applications for the Aspiring Nurse Program for Garrett Regional Medical Center and Potomac Valley Hospital are now available online. The WVJC School of Nursing is currently accepting applications for the next cohort of online/hybrid nursing students. Visit wvjc.edu for more details.

*Passing the NCLEX-RN exam is required to become a Registered Nurse.
