During the March Board meeting, new curricula for Elementary English Language Arts and Grades 6–8 Science were approved following a public review period from February 11 to March 4, 2026. The programs will be implemented district-wide beginning in the 2026–27 school year. During the same meeting, Mrs. Dawna Ashby was named the next Chief Academic Officer for Garrett County Public Schools, effective July 1, 2026. She currently serves as Director of Early Childhood and Elementary Education and will succeed Dr. Nicole Miller.

Savage Highlands State Park is expected to open in late summer 2026. Located in Garrett County and surrounded by nearly 700 acres of Savage River State Forest and the Mount Aetna Tract, the 40-acre park will offer new opportunities for outdoor recreation. The park remains closed while upgrades to existing structures are completed, with an anticipated opening in late August 2026, pending progress.
