As black bears increase their feeding activity to prepare for winter hibernation, expect to see them crossing roadways more frequently this fall. Please secure all outdoor food sources to keep bears from losing their natural fear of humans and to help protect both wildlife and the community.

Potomac Highlands United Way has launched two new grant initiatives to support local working families and community organizations across Allegany, Garrett, Hampshire, and Mineral counties. The ALICE Crisis Diversion Fund provides up to $1,000 for households facing unexpected financial emergencies, while Meeting the Moment Grants offer up to $500 to help local nonprofits and agencies address emerging community needs.

Garrett County Public Schools has introduced non-contact flag rugby into its physical education curriculum to build student teamwork, motor skills, and confidence. Supported by Rugby Maryland, the initiative includes instructor training and hands-on student workshops to safely expand access to the growing sport.
