Governor Wes Moore signed the Rural Communities Improvement Act on May 8, 2023, expanding the Rural Maryland Prosperity Investment Fund to include workforce and cooperative development projects. The Rural Maryland Council will administer the formula-driven grant program.

The Garrett County Health Department is hosting a day-long trauma-informed care training on June 26, 2023. Deep Creek Daily Notes May 15

Monday, May 15, 2023: This weekend was one for the books! Despite the cold, rainy, and muddy conditions, more than 200 resilient individuals gathered at Deep Creek State Park for the inaugural Walk for Recovery. This event, held on Saturday, showcased the unity and determination of the community in support of recovery from Substance Use Disorder (SUD).

The weather today will be mostly sunny, with highs in the lower 70s and a low of 52. Southeast winds of around 5 to 10 mph, becoming west in the afternoon. The chance of rain is 10%.

FYI — a recent fire in Mountain Lake Park caused the release of petroleum & automotive fluids into a ditch that goes to Little Yough River. Hazmat teams & Maryland Dept. of Environment are addressing the situation but the waterway between MD Highway & Little Yough should be avoided until the cleanup is complete. Contact Garrett County Health Dept at 301-334-7760 with any concerns.

May is National Lyme Disease Awareness Month, a time for education on how to prevent tick-borne diseases. Warmer weather and humidity create ideal conditions for disease-carrying ticks. The entire East Coast is susceptible to various tick-borne illnesses, including Lyme disease and in Garrett County, ticks are collected and tested for disease.

At the May Board of Education Meeting, President Tom Woods announced a change to the agenda item regarding the Interim Superintendent search. Dr. Brenda McCartney is set to serve in the position for the next school year, pending approval from the State Superintendent of Schools and contract negotiations.

Garrett County Public Schools will have early dismissal for students on May 16, 2023, for staff development in the afternoon. Various professional development opportunities will be conducted for staff based on identified needs in each building. Administrative offices will remain on their regular schedule.

The Southern Garrett High Unified Track Team won the western regional tournament at Fort Hill High School and is headed to the state tournament! Best of luck at the event, which takes place at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, MD, on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 9:00 AM. Congrats on your regional win!

The weather today will be mostly sunny, with highs in the mid-70s and a low of 53. Northwest winds of around 5 mph.

According to a study, the typical employee in Maryland is willing to endure a 44.1-hour workweek, which is 4.1 hours more than the current average of 40 hours. On a national scale, Americans are willing to work 44.4 hours, as per the same survey.

A recent study ranks the US states by the average monthly earnings of teenagers in summer jobs after adjusting for the cost of living. Maryland teens earn an average of $866 per month, slightly below the national average of $880.

In 2022, the Garrett County Health Department received 2,050 hours of volunteer service from 115 individuals. Ryan Amburgey and Dr. Charles Lefebure were recognized for volunteering over 100 hours each, while eligible volunteers were invited to a celebration in March.

The public meeting of the Board of County Commissioners is scheduled for May 16, 2023, and will be live-streamed on their Facebook page.

End of the Line Books, a nonprofit used bookstore situated in the boxcar at the B&O Railway Station on East Liberty Street in Oakland, MD, will reopen for the summer season on Saturday, May 20, 2023. It will operate from May 20 to October 7 on Wednesdays and Saturdays (11:00 AM – 3:00 PM), and also on Fridays (11:00 AM – 3:00 PM) from June 30 to September 1.

Tuesday, May 10, 2023: I had a lot of my driveway wash out yesterday morning — how much rain did we get? My neighbors (in Oakland) said it was about 4 inches of rain.

The weather today will be sunny, with a high near 68 and a low around 43. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 8:00 AM downstairs at Ace’s Run Restaurant will be a “Legislative Wrap-up” event. Hear from Delegate Jim Hinebaugh, Senator Mike McKay, and Chambers Lobbyist Mike O’Halloran on legislation affecting Garrett County and local businesses.

Experience Gilligan’s Island – The Musical at Wisp Resort’s mountaintop amphitheater every Wednesday through Sunday from July 27 to August 20, 2023, at 7:30 PM.

Americans’ love for coffee and alcohol is no secret, and a survey of 4,000 respondents confirms it. Marylanders, on average, can’t go more than 12 days without coffee, which affects their productivity and energy levels. The saying “no coffee, no workee” holds true.

Join the Maryland Junior Ranger Program, a summer youth program hosted by state parks, which inspires children to explore the outdoors, connect with nature, and learn about their culture and heritage under the guidance of park rangers and natural resource professionals. Celebrating its 50th year, this program continues to inspire new generations.

Maryland aims to plant 5 million trees by 2031, prioritizing native species in underserved areas. It’s a massive project led by various organizations, and DNR will provide support with technical assistance, seedlings, planting, and project management.

Garrett County law enforcement held their second annual Fish with a Cop event at Accident Pond, pairing kids with officers for a fun day of fishing, games, and food. The event strengthened relationships between police and the community and was a huge success!

Garrett Regional Medical Center marked National Volunteer Week, honoring those who selflessly give their time to better their community. The annual event celebrated in the third week of April, shines a spotlight on these inspiring individuals.

Giancarlo Bernardo and Wyatt Slocum, international students from Canada at Garrett College, visited Crellin Elementary School in April. They spoke to students in grades 2-5 about their country, covering topics like the flag, money, exports, climate, food, sports, and landmarks.

Monday, May 8, 2023: The weather today will be patchy fog this morning. Cloudy, with a chance of showers, with a slight chance of thunderstorms this morning, then partly sunny, with isolated showers this afternoon—highs in the upper 60s and a low of 54. West winds of around 10 to 15 mph. The chance of rain is 50%.

US vacation costs vary depending on factors like the type of travel and destination. A study found that 57% of 2022 summer vacationers paid more than expected, likely due to the rising US inflation rate.

Rural Maryland Council celebrated a legislative win for rural communities with the signing of HB596/SB511 Health and Human Services Transportation Act of 2023 on May 3rd. The bill enables the Rural Nonemergency Medical Transportation Pilot Program to coordinate transportation for eligible individuals to or from medical services through a nonprofit organization.

Garrett County Health Department’s low-cost rabies clinics for 2023 will start on May 22 and end on May 27. To prevent the threat of rabies, pet owners can bring their dogs, cats, and ferrets to the $5.00 per animal clinic in their area.

A study on financial literacy in the US found that 48.9% of Maryland adults rank with “high financial literacy”.

The Maryland DNR and US Fish and Wildlife Service are tagging northern snakeheads to incentivize their removal from local waters. Up to 500 tags will be placed on snakeheads from various areas, and those who catch a tagged fish can win either $10 or $200. To qualify for the reward, anglers must report the tag number to the US Fish and Wildlife Service and provide a picture of the harvested fish by 2024.

Wednesday May 3, 2023: I didn’t realize we’d have to continue updating our season snowfall totals: by my measurements, overall, we haven’t received a lot of snow!

Did you know: Grantsville Medical Center offers patient care for all ages (since 2017) and serves Grantsville and neighboring communities in PA? It is part of Garrett Regional Medical Center and is located next to Total Biz Fulfillment and World Lighthouse Worship Center in the Northern Garrett Industrial Park.

The US Department of Labor runs the WORC Initiative, which provides training and support to workers affected by SUD and ARC partners with DOL for economic distress and workforce development. Successful WORC projects use community-led plans for economic resilience. Apply by June 13, 2023.

Chick-fil-A’s True Inspiration Awards recognize nonprofits in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico for their work in caring for people, providing food aid, community support, and environmental initiatives. Eligible nonprofits can apply by June 1, 2023.

Since 1956, May has been recognized as National Bike Month, and the League of American Bicyclists has sponsored this celebration of cycling for decades, as a means to advance the movement to build a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone. Southwest wind 7 to 10 mph. South wind 6 to 8 mph. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Sunday will be showers with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. High near 59 and low of 36. Southeast wind 8 to 10 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

A new report shows Americans are less confident about having enough money to live comfortably in retirement, and both workers and retirees are worried about inflation’s impact on their savings and spending. The economy feels uncertain that’s for sure.

GaCo 1629, a robotics team from Garrett County, was inducted into the FIRST Championship Hall of Fame after winning the “Chairman’s Award.” This makes them the 34th team to receive this honor in the 34 years of FIRST Robotics. Board member and mentor Josh Hinebaugh attended the Flag Raising ceremony.

The Maryland Historical Trust will give out 10 awards during Preservation Month, starting May 1. These awards will honor exceptional education, restoration, revitalization, and leadership achievements in the preservation field. This year, Garrett County is not on the list but there are some cool projects happening across Maryland.

The Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Company has unveiled a Capital Improvement plan worth $1.2 million from Governor Moore’s Fiscal year 2024 Budget. The plan aims to expand and complete their current facility by adding offices, sleeping quarters, lounge, kitchen, and locker rooms for both volunteer and career staff, along with training and conference areas to facilitate community programs and training.

Golf for a cause! Play the new championship back nine at Thousand Acres Golf Club before it opens to the public. All proceeds go to Cindy’s Fund, helping locals with cancer. Today, at 5:00 PM start with food and drink provided. Only 36 players are allowed.

The Youth Fishing Rodeo event on Saturday is open to all children aged 3-15. Participants must bring their own gear and bait, although some gear will be available for loan. Door prizes will be given at 11:00 AM, and all participants will be treated to a complimentary hot dog and drink sponsored by the locals.

Join Oakland Golf Club for Frost Bite, an exciting event on Saturday at 10:00 AM (rain date May 6). The event features a Scramble format with two-person teams and chances to win Team and Hole Prizes

The Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park hosts the annual Ramp Cook-off on Saturday to celebrate Garrett County’s folk life. Join the Ramp Cook-Off and Tasting to experience the tradition of ramp gathering, preservation, and eating firsthand.

Join the Civic Club of Oakland for their 3rd Annual Anything and Everything Goes Event at the Mountain Fresh Pavilion downtown on Saturday from 9:00 AM to noon. Vendors may set up from 7:30 PM on the day of the event.

Come along with Ranger Noah on Sunday for a relaxed 2-mile walk around Big Run State Park and try to spot and identify as many bird species as possible.

A delightful Brazilian duo is performing at Mountain City Traditional Arts in Frostburg on Sunday, at 4:00 PM, courtesy of World Artists Experiences. Although the concert is FREE, donations are welcome.

Deep Creek Daily Notes April 27

Thursday April 27, 2023: HAPPY RETIREMENT DAY TO MY MOM! Mom, as you retire after many years of dedicated work, I want to express how proud I am of all that you have accomplished. You have always been a hardworking and caring person and as you embark on this new chapter of your life, I wish you nothing but happiness and relaxation! Congratulations on your retirement, Mom!” ♥️

At the April meeting, Board President Tom Woods announced a search for an interim superintendent. The Board plans to provide an update on the process at the May meeting and public updates will be shared as they become available.

The American Lung Association issues the “State of the Air” report using quality-assured data from EPA and to measure ozone and particle pollution. Garrett County scored an “A” on the 2023 report card.

Oakland Golf Club invites you to join them for their exciting Frost Bite event on April 29 at 10:00 AM (with a rain date scheduled for May 6). This thrilling event will feature a Scramble format, where teams of two will compete for Team and Hole Prizes. The entry fee is $35 per member and $50 per non-member, which includes a cart!

Wednesday April 26, 2023: Today may be a “short notes” day. I was not feeling well at all yesterday and I ended up sleeping most of the day. Now, today I am playing catch-up!

Tuesday April 25, 2023: Here’s just one more (maybe!) photo of the Northern Lights here in Garrett County. Note they were faint here but I was able to use the camera to see the beautiful show.

Marshall Green, a fourth-grade student at Broad Ford Elementary, won the Maryland Council on Economic Education poster contest with his tax-themed entry.

Sipside Lounge will be opening one more time on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM to benefit Garrett Regional Medical Center’s Foundation campaign for behavioral health.

A public hearing regarding the proposed 2024 property tax rate in Garrett County will be held on Monday, May 1 at 4:00 PM. The hearing will take place at the Garrett County Court House in Room 209.

Monday April 24, 2023: Did anyone else see the Northern Lights from right here in Garrett County? From about 11:30pm to about 2:00am, I had my camera and tripod up at the overlook off Route 135. These photos are the product of about an 8-second shutter and an ISO of about 1000. The aurora borealis was definitely there and we began to see the light “spikes” with our naked eye!
