March 28, 2023: Ooops! I missed Maryland Day! It was March 25 … on a Saturday this year. The formal observance of Maryland Day began in 1903 when the State Board of Education chose one day in the school year to be devoted to Maryland history. March 25th was named Maryland Day by the Board. In 1916, the General Assembly authorized Maryland Day as a legal holiday (Chapter 633, Acts of 1916).
What is your favorite thing about Maryland? I love that it’s “America in Miniature” with beaches, cities, rural roads, mountains, and lakes. Maryland is the best because it has it all!

The annual County United Way campaign in Garrett County is nearing its end, with less than 40 days left. So far, $73,646 has been raised, which is towards the campaign goal of $80,000 for the county.
The Top Yough is a challenging Class IV-V whitewater race reserved only for skilled boaters. The timed race will be held, with participants starting at 60-second intervals this Saturday, April 1, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Swallow Falls State Park. March 23, 2023: On Tuesday night, my family and I went to the dough-raiser event for Garrett Robotics Team 1629. My dad is the “construction guy” for the team and these teachers and mentors do so much to pave a path for kids in the science and technology fields. Mr. Chuck is always sharing his love for STEAM and LEGOs so Mr. Chuck brought over a duck that he’d made out of LEGOs. This duck “walks” down a ramp made by my dad. A small lesson in physics…. his name is Quacko.

The Office of the Attorney General has received information that businesses in Maryland have been receiving a letter entitled “2023 Certificate of Good Standing Request Form” that requests a fee in exchange for a letter of good standing with an “official seal of the Secretary of State.” This letter is a scam.

It’s worth listening in to hear the details behind the proposed figures. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable information about the quality and character of each school’s learning environment so that schools can promote a climate that supports student learning.
There’s a new report looking at the recent impact of inflation on credit card reliance in the U.S. While inflation might have finally reached its peak, many Americans continue to struggle with high prices. The analysis found that 35.5% of adults in Maryland relied on credit cards to meet their spending needs, and 18.0% have increased their credit card usage due to recent price increases.

The vernal equinox is the equinox in March, when the sun crosses the celestial equator in a northerly direction, marking the prime meridian of right ascension. This is the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator, from south to north. The vernal equinox happens on March 19, 20, or 21 every year in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, this same event marks the beginning of fall. Meteorologists mark the spring from March 1 through May 31st.

March 16, 2023: March 16th recognizes National Freedom of Information Day which is a little obscure … to say the least. I jumped on this as the note of the day since I have training as a Public Information Officer or PIO. The PIO is the individual responsible for communicating with the public, the media, and/or coordinating with other agencies on behalf of a government agency. This day was selected since it commemorates the birthday of President James Madison. Madison was the foremost advocate for openness in government and he held individual rights and freedom of information in high importance.

I have had several folks reach out because of scammers contacting them in regard to their online marketplace items. I would be wary of anyone who asks for your bank account information, anyone who wants to send money via Zelle, anyone with a sense of urgency, anyone who sends a check for more than the amount, and, unfortunately, anyone that just doesn’t give you good feeling. I’m sorry, I cannot control these attempted scammers – please stay vigilant!

GaCo 1629 had an exciting weekend at their first qualification event in Blacksburg, VA! They were one of 34 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) teams from Virginia, DC, and Maryland, and they ended up as the 2nd ranked team in robot performance after 12 matches. They were the captain of the 2nd seed alliance and made it to the final matches, but sadly, they lost to the 1st seed alliance. Great effort, GaCo 1629!
The 2022 Maryland School Report Card was just released on March 9, 2023. The report provides ratings for Maryland schools based on Academic Achievement, Academic Progress, Progress Toward English Language Proficiency, and School Quality and Student Success — it looks like good news for Maryland, with over 75% of schools earning 3, 4, or 5 stars this year!

Garrett County Public Schools will have a synchronous virtual learning day today due to winter weather conditions. In-person learning is cancelled, and students are required to take all necessary learning materials home yesterday, including digital devices.

The Maryland State Education Superintendent, Mohammed Choudhury, visited Garrett County Public Schools to shadow different roles and observe a day in the life of a student, principal, and superintendent. This was his second visit since starting his term in July 2021, and GCPS was honored to host him.
Over the past six months, the Garrett County Health Department has bid farewell to four of its employees with 122 years combined years of service.

Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) needs public and private non-profit organizations to act as meal sites for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). SFSP provides free, nutritious meals to children and teenagers during summer when school is not in session. The program is available to children and teens under 18 who attend public or non-profit schools and those above 18 with a mental or physical disability. Applications to become a summer meal site should be submitted by June 15, 2023.

Wisp Resort operations for Friday, March 3 have ceased due to conditions. Skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and the mountain coaster will not operate on Friday, March 3. The resort plans to have all of these activities operating on Saturday, March 4, weather permitting…. my fingers are crossed that the temps drop and they can make just a bit more snow to extend the season.
