Autumn Glory Weekend

Updated October 9, Maryland’s fall foliage is showing mixed progress. In Garrett County, about a quarter of the trees are already bare, while others range from green to rich burgundy and gold. Along the Catoctin Mountains, color change continues, but drought has caused early leaf drop, especially among yellow-poplars and blackgums. On the Eastern Shore, leaves are just beginning to turn as persimmons and pomegranates ripen. With this year’s unpredictable foliage, now’s the time to catch the colors while they last.

As of October 8, Maryland Department of Natural Resources crews have stocked 2,200 trout. In Garrett County, the Casselman River (delayed harvest, catch-and-return only) received rainbow trout, while Bear Creek was stocked with golden and rainbow trout.

Fall is in the air, and the weather looks to be perfect for the annual Fireman’s Parade. Note, Third Street and Second Street will be closed this evening beginning at 5:00 PM. I hope to see you there!

The weather today will be cloudy, with a chance of showers in the morning, then mostly sunny in the afternoon–highs in the lower 60s. Northwest winds of around 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph. The chance of rain is 50%.

As of October 7, Maryland Department of Natural Resources crews have stocked 2,150 trout. Garrett County’s North Branch Potomac River in Barnum received both golden and rainbow trout.

Garrett County Public Schools proudly announced that 2025–26 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Laura Witt, received a $2,500 donation from the Andrew S. Woods Memorial Foundation through WGW Youth Charities. The funds will support educational initiatives and student success. Mrs. Witt expressed her gratitude, noting the donation’s impact on providing meaningful learning experiences for students.

Tonight’s ReGrounding event focuses on Medications for Addiction Treatment, part of the Maryland Department of Health’s free community education series on public health solutions to the opioid crisis. Hosted by the Garrett County Health Department from 6–8 PM at the Garrett Information Enterprise Center in McHenry. Registration is encouraged but not required.

A new survey reveals that Marylanders need to work 14 days on average to cover their household bills. Among 3,002 families surveyed, dining out is the first expense they’d cut when tightening budgets. The study also highlights how families are feeling the strain of high grocery prices, rising utility costs, and job insecurity.

Boating title and registration fees will increase effective October 1, 2025, following approval by the Maryland General Assembly. This is the first adjustment in 42 years to address rising administrative costs.

The Rotary Club of Oakland was recently recognized as one of the top Clubs in the U.S. for membership growth over the past four years. Accepting the award were Mike Tumbarello, immediate past president; Crystal Brady, current president and award presenter; and Dawn Linn, Rotary District Governor.

Maryland Fishing Report as of October 1: Fall trout stocking begins soon, with updates posted online as conditions allow. Low water levels persist in many areas, including the upper Potomac. Crappie are gathering near deep structure, while largemouth bass are feeding more aggressively with cooler temps.

Hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant, has been found near the Honi-Honi docks at Deep Creek Lake, raising concerns for the lake’s ecosystem. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is taking action with treatments and updated management plans, urging residents and visitors to report sightings, avoid disturbing affected areas, and follow safe boating practices to help prevent its spread.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will begin its 2025 fall trout stocking program, releasing thousands of rainbow, brown, and golden rainbow trout into streams and impoundments statewide to provide quality fishing opportunities for anglers of all ages this season.

Maryland State Highway Administration will install structural steel for the bridge replacement MD 135 bridge over the Little Youghiogheny River in Oakland, Garrett Co. This will occur on Sept. 30 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Motorists can expect brief 15-minute closures. Drivers should plan extra travel time.

Garrett County Public Schools will administer a Behavioral Health Screener for all Pre-K–12 students starting this week, September 29, 2025. The survey provides insights into student experiences and school climate, with an opt-out option available for parents.
