Garrett County Public School’s Innovative Early Childhood Partnerships Receive State Recognition

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) was recently recognized for its work in the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future – Pillar I, particularly its strong partnerships supporting early childhood education. Mrs. Dawna Ashby, Director of Early Childhood and Elementary Education and Title I for GCPS, shared with the AIB the collaborative efforts among GCPS, Head Start, and the Judy Center.

Mrs. Ashby highlighted how these organizations work together to plan and deliver professional development opportunities, ensuring staff across programs have access to high-quality instructional strategies and best practices. By braiding funding and coordinating resources, the partners provide comprehensive support for both students and educators.

GCPS offers full-day Pre-K 3 and full-day Pre-K 4 programs. The Pre-K 4 program is universally available, while the Pre-K 3 program serves students who meet enrollment eligibility requirements. Garrett County was also recognized for its collaborative classroom model, which brings together GCPS and Head Start staff to support students and families while helping children enter kindergarten ready to learn.

In addition, Mrs. Ashby shared information about community partnerships that support the Learning Beyond the Classroom Bus. This innovative program travels to designated locations throughout Garrett County, providing early childhood learning opportunities, books, and essential food items to families with children from birth to age five.

Garrett County’s collaborative approach reflects a shared commitment to supporting young learners and their families. Following the presentation, Dr. Kirwan commended GCPS for its successful partnership with Head Start and expressed appreciation for the creativity and innovation demonstrated through these efforts.
