Virtual Brunch and Learn

July 7 @ 11:00 am
Free

The Deep Creek Watershed Foundation (DCWF) is beginning a multi-layered initiative focused on improving water quality throughout the Deep Creek Lake watershed. Following the collection and review of data from commissioned tributary studies, the Foundation has identified septic stewardship and wastewater management as critical priorities for protecting the long-term health of the watershed and lake.

This effort directly supports Goal 9 of the Deep Creek Watershed Management Plan, which seeks to “protect the watershed from the adverse effects of impaired septic systems and ensure adequate capacity and management of public sewerage systems.”

DCWF is currently working on several projects designed to encourage proper stewardship and maintenance of onsite septic systems to help preserve and protect water quality in the Deep Creek Lake watershed. As part of this initiative, DCWF is partnering with University of Maryland Extension to host a two-part virtual “Brunch & Learn” educational series focused on septic stewardship in Garrett County.

The second session in the series will be held on July 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. EDT and will feature two guest speakers. The first guest speaker is Craig Umbel, Director of Environmental Health for the Garrett County Health Department. Mr. Umbel will discuss the types of septic systems currently being installed in the county and will provide information on what the Health Department does as an agency when a system is failing or when an increase in flow is proposed. The second guest speaker is Andrew Tichnel, Utilities Assistant Division Chief for the Garrett County Department of Public Works. Mr. Tichinel will discuss the public sewer system in Garrett County, grinder pump systems, red light system alerts, and how property owners can best communicate with Public Works if they have questions or concerns.

Community members interested in attending the free, virtual Brunch & Learn session may register online at:
