  • Historic Schoolhouse Open House

    New Germany Schoolhouse 580 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, MD, United States

    Come experience what it was like to be a student in the 1930s in this newly restored one-room schoolhouse. Teacher docents will share interesting stories and demonstrate instructional methods and period games. The history of the Civilian Conservation Corps and New Germany State Park will be explored with hands-on activities in the school yard. The program is free. Handicap-only parking at the Schoolhouse. Regular parking at Lot No. 5 by the Lake.

    St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Hosts Free “Canning Green Beans with Barb Troyer” On Saturday, July 25, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church is hosting its second of four monthly canning workshops, June-September. “Canning Green Beans with Barb Troyer” will be held 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM in the church's commercial kitchen at 6 South Second Street in Oakland, Maryland. Participants in the first workshop were given a new 38th edition of the Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving, with over 500 recipes. For new participants who did not attend the first workshop, copies of either the 37th or 38th editions of this valuable book will be given. On July 25, Barb Troyer, mother of Audrey Kennedy, who is the owner of local First Choice Physical Therapy, will demonstrate traditional methods for canning green beans with two kinds of pressure canners: pressure gauge and weighted top.   • Garrett County Department of Social Services Assistance Program

    Ruth Enlow Library - Grantsville 102 Parkside Drive, Grantsville, Maryland

    Occurring on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Grantsville branch, representatives from the Garrett County Department of Social Services will be in the library to serve the community through their assistance outreach program. Customers can come see a DSS staff person at any of these locations to pick up paperwork, drop off paperwork, apply for services like SNAP, CASH Assistance and Medical Assistance, or just to ask questions about the programs and services offered by our agency. Staff can also provide a referral to other community agencies if we do not have a program to address the person’s needs. ANYONE can access ANY of these locations. This schedule provides flexibility to our customers who may be working in communities away from their home or who may be facing transportation challenges. These locations also provide support to our customers by making DSS forms available to customers during the location’s open hours of business. Customers can look for the file box labeled “DSS FORMS” to pick up forms, information, or a pre-paid envelope in which to return completed forms to our office for processing.
