With great excitement, the Allegany Arts Council announces the return of the Mountain Maryland Plein Air Competition and Exhibition, taking place June 9–15, 2025. This signature event will once again bring together talented painters from across the region and country to capture the beauty of the community, from historic streets to scenic vistas and waterways throughout Allegany and Garrett counties. The exhibition will be hosted at the Allegany Museum through a partnership between the Allegany Arts Council and the Mountain Maryland Plein Air committee. Additional events will take place at the new Arcadian Gallery and the C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts. From Monday, June 9, through Thursday, June 12, artists will be seen painting on downtown Oakland’s sidewalks, at the historic train station, and around the lake, much like the French Impressionist painter Monet. All paintings will be available for purchase on Friday from 6:00–8:00 PM at the Allegany Museum in Cumberland. Tickets are required for the show and sale. Garrett County Department of Social Services Assistance Program

Occurring on the 2nd Friday of the month at the Accident branch, representatives from the Garrett County Department of Social Services will be in the library to serve the community through their assistance outreach program. Customers can come see a DSS staff person at any of these locations to pick up paperwork, drop off paperwork, apply for services like SNAP, CASH Assistance, and Medical Assistance, or just to ask questions about the programs and services offered by our agency. Staff can also provide referrals to other community agencies if we do not have a program to address the person’s needs. ANYONE can access ANY of these locations. This schedule provides flexibility to our customers who may be working in communities away from their homes or who may be facing transportation challenges. These locations also provide support to our customers by making DSS forms available to customers during the location’s open hours of business. Free Fishing Days

The first two Saturdays in June and July 4 are license-free fishing days all across Maryland! On these days, licenses are not required to catch and possess finfish in tidal and non-tidal waters for recreational purposes. All other fishing laws and regulations still apply. Need gear? New Germany State Park is now a Tackle Loaner Program location! To borrow a rod and reel, stop by the Lake House between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM or call the Ranger Station at 301-895-5453 to make an appointment. Please bring your own bait!

Dans Mountain State Park will be partnering with Westmar Middle and George's Creek Elementary Community Schools to offer monthly hikes on the Lonacona Loop Trail. Ranger Mac will be leading these challenging 4.5-mile hikes on the following dates: June 14, July 19, August 16, September 20, and October 18. Lunch will be provided after each hike, sponsored by Community Schools. Participants are asked to register by Monday before each hike to ensure there is enough food for everyone.
