Garrett County Community Action announces 2026 dates for its popular Homeownership Education & Finance Class. The free workshops cover every essential step of the homebuying process, from selecting a realtor, identifying insurance, and navigating financing, with topics such as credit analysis, lender underwriting criteria, and much more, all designed to equip future homeowners with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. Scheduled workshops are February 2 & 23, April 6 & 20, June 1 & 15, August 3 & 10, and October 5 & 19. All sessions begin at 1:00 PM for approximately three hours each at Community Action's Oakland offices, led by Nick Fratz-Orr of Railey Realty, Amanda Lewis of Healy Insurance Group, and April Jones of First United Bank & Trust. Attendance at both classes is required to earn HUD-approved Home Buyer Certification, which qualifies the prospective buyer for Garrett County government's Pathway to Homeownership grant for up to $6,875 toward down-payment or closing costs, valid for 5 years. The Oakland/Mountain Lake Park Lions Club hosts the Autumn Glory 5K Run and 2-Mile Walk on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at Broadford Lake. 5K runners start at 8:30 a.m., with 2-mile walkers following at 8:40 a.m. Runners may walk, but walkers should refrain from running. Race-day registration and packet pick-up begin at 7:00 a.m. All activities take place outdoors or under an open pavilion, so be prepared for the weather. Parking is next to the start/finish. The course follows Broadford Lake across the breast dam to Simon Pearce glass blowing and back, over a mixture of pavement, mowed grass trails, and gravel road. Bib numbers are recorded manually at the finish (no chip timing), so please wear your bib visibly on the front of your outfit and be sure it is recorded as you exit the finish chute. Customers can come see a DSS staff person at any of these locations to pick up paperwork, drop off paperwork, apply for services like SNAP, CASH Assistance, and Medical Assistance, or just to ask questions about the programs and services offered by our agency. It's the last weekend to get lost in this year's corn maze at Alpaca Acres Farm and Fun, where the 2026 Fall Fest wraps up Friday through Sunday, Oct. 16–18. This year's "Get Lost With Dolly" maze is a tribute to the life and legacy of Dolly Parton and her Imagination Library, and visitors can choose an easy or challenging map by scanning a QR code at the entrance. Fall Fest visitors can also enter to win Dolly-inspired prizes, including a Smoky Mountain getaway with Dollywood tickets and a lodging certificate. Beyond the maze, Fall Fest includes family-friendly attractions, alpaca viewing along the fence line, a pumpkin patch, Spookley the Square Pumpkin's Storybook Trail, The Farm Store, the Farmyard Food Truck, and Big Al's Apple Cider Slushies topped with homemade cider donuts. Tickets must be purchased in advance for a specific start time, and everyone on grounds needs a ticket (no charge for children 23 months and younger). Last entry is two hours before close. AJ's Adventures is hosting a Halloween Ride on the trails of the Huckleberry Rocks Area at Wolf Den Run State Park over three nights leading up to Halloween. Riders can rent one of AJ's machines or bring their own. Ride times are: • Thursday, Oct. 29, 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. • Friday, Oct. 30, 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. • Saturday, Oct. 31, 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. No reservation is required, so riders can just show up, but booking ahead guarantees a time slot. There is no age limit for passengers. ATV operators must be 16 or older, and side-by-side operators must be 18 or older. The Huckleberry Rocks Area is located at 890 North Hill Road in Kitzmiller. This FREE ride is for beginner level riders looking for advice on local trail / MTB riding and interest in improving their skills in a noncompetitive atmosphere. Please sign up in advance: Sign Up for Margraff After Dark We're heading out to Margraff on Friday, October 30 at 8 PM for a Halloween costume/haunted bike ride, and you're invited. It's an easy, social pace and nobody gets left behind, so you don't have to be a hardcore rider to come out and have fun with us. Dress up! The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is offering a Trapper Education Course on Saturday, November 1, from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM at New Germany State Park Lake House. Anyone who wishes to trap furbearers under the authority of a Furbearer Permit must first obtain a certificate of trapper education. In order to pass this course and obtain a Maryland trapper certification card, participants must: 1. Participate in trap handling/field exercises; and 2. Pass a written test (50 questions) with a score of at least 70%. Participants under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The course is free, but registration is required.
