The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will host a public open house from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 27, at the Allegany Museum, 3 Pershing St., Cumberland, to share information and receive feedback on the ongoing study along I-68 (National Freeway) Cumberland Viaduct from US 220 (McMullen Highway) to MD 639 (Willowbrook Road) in Allegany County. The study seeks to identify opportunities to improve safety, access and connectivity for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. Known as a Planning and Environmental Linkages Study (PEL), the effort considers environmental, community and economic goals early in the planning stage. Those goals are then carried throughout project development, design and construction. The study and analysis of needs began in winter 2025 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2027. The public open house is an opportunity for residents, businesses and commuters to learn about the transportation needs along the corridor and view the study details. Attendees may arrive any time during the open house to view maps and displays, speak with State Highway Administration representatives and provide feedback. There will be no formal presentation.
