The Garrett County Health Department announces the final series of low-cost rabies clinics for 2022. The vaccination of dogs, cats, and ferrets will begin Monday, September 12, and conclude Saturday, September 17.

The Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) Transportation Department has made multiple updates to bus routes throughout the county for the coming school year.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. The public is invited to participate in a local event today from 6–8 PM, at the Glades Park Pavilion at 10 Spruce Lane, Oakland. The Stories of Hope & Candlelight Vigil is designed to raise awareness that overdose affects all walks of life and is preventable.

Governor Larry Hogan has ordered the Maryland Flag lowered to half-staff for International Overdose Awareness Day.

The Oakland Police Department is investigating a destruction of property incident that occurred during the nighttime hours of August 24, 2022, at the Oakland Golf Course. An unknown person or persons drove a vehicle onto the golf course, causing damage to the grass. Anyone with information in reference to the investigation is asked to call the Oakland Police Department at 301-334-2100, the Garrett County Sheriff’s Department at 301-334-1911, or Garrett County Crime Solvers at http://www.garrettcountycrimesolvers.org.

The Maryland Park Service was awarded 15 improvement project grants (for few local projects, too) by the Friends of Maryland State Parks through the organization’s program, “Small Grants, Big Impact!” This funding is for projects that focus on conservation, environmental education, and outdoor recreation, and are important additions benefitting Maryland State Parks and their millions of visitors.

Read more about investments in rural Maryland through various funds and councils including the Rural Maryland Prosperity Investment Fund (RMPIF) and the Maryland Agricultural Education and Rural Development Assistance Fund (MAERDAF). Over $8 million was announced for FY 2023!

The Mountain MD Gateway to the West Heritage Area is accepting applications for the FY23 Mini-Grant cycle through August 29. Applicants must be a nonprofit or local jurisdiction and be located within the Heritage Area boundary. The Deep Creek Lake Lions is pleased to announce the formal opening of a new public disc golf course at the McHenry Community Park on BumbleBee Rd. The Glades at Meshach Run is a 9-hole, free-to-play disc golf course. Disc golf is similar to conventional golf, with throwing discs taking the place of balls and raised metal baskets taking the place of holes.

At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY) in 1971 and passed in 1973,  the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day.” The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality.

Will you see a rocket in the skies? It won’t quite be visible here in Garrett County but NASA at Wallops Island has plans to launch a rocket between 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM tonight, weather permitting. This rocket launch will be visible throughout the Eastern Shore of MD, all of Delaware except maybe Wilmington City, most of Southern MD, and the western shore of the Bay as far north as Harford and Cecil counties at the top of the Bay.

American Red Cross of Allegheny Highlands has steps everyone can take to help kids remain safe as they head back to school.

The world’s only mountaintop whitewater course, located in Garrett County atop Wisp Resort, is more than just a family-oriented recreational activity. On Saturday, August 9, a local effort to provide training for swift water rescue to several Volunteer Fire Departments in Garrett County took place.

Each year, the Garrett County STEPS to Better Health Committee (STEPS) offers two scholarships to Garrett County graduating seniors who are pursuing a career in the health care field. This year’s high school recipients are Lillian Argabrite and Tiffany Opel.

A study reveals Maryland is among the most progressive states when it comes to computer science education.

Crews were able to complete the step of replacing the field lights on the Northern Garrett High School (NGHS) football field this past week. The lights were turned on for the first time Thursday, August 11, around 9:30 PM. The lighting project upgrades the previous lighting on the field while being more energy efficient.

The summer days keep rolling along – be sure to enjoy what time we have now with kids before they are back to school. Soon it will be September, exciting times for anglers as water temperatures cool and fishing kicks into high gear. But until then, remember that hot weather creates tough conditions for undersized striped bass that are caught and released. Be sure to check the striped bass fishing advisory forecast to plan your trip and help save the smaller fish for future seasons.

The pool at Dans Mountain State Park will be closed from August 22 through August 26 and August 29 through September 2 due to a shortage of lifeguards as staff return to school. All scheduled pool parties will be honored. The pool will otherwise be open through Labor Day, September 5, from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM daily.

The Food and Nutrition Services Department (FNS) of Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) has announced that the federally funded program for free meals will come to an end next Thursday, August 25th, 2022.  As food service continues to transition back to pre-pandemic standards, students may still qualify for free or reduced-price meals for the coming school year by filling out a Meal Application.

The 2022-2024 Garrett County & Surrounding Region Community Health Assessment has been published and is now available to browse online.
