Wednesday September 14

The weather today will be sunny—highs in the upper 60s and a low of 51. Northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

Maryland’s Student Loan Debt Relief Tax Credit applications must be submitted by tomorrow.

The Garrett County Board of Education will receive Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from experienced vendors to construct the Southern High School Fieldhouse. The deadline for the receipt is Friday, September 30, 2022, at noon.

There’s not a lot going on today but the Mountain Fresh Farmers Market has its open-air farmers market today from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Downtown Oakland. As always, you will find fresh produce, plants, meats, eggs, baked goods, jams & jellies, body care items, and crafts all made and grown by the vendor.

Also, join Garrett Regional Medical Center for an information session on the Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Program today, from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the Oakland Hospital.

The Garrett County Health Department has announced that it will begin offering the recently approved Moderna and Pfizer updated COVID-19 booster vaccines to persons aged 65 and older.

The game of chess helps young people learn to concentrate, think logically, develop problem-solving skills, spot patterns and categorize information. Many educators consider chess a valuable and engaging activity that helps young people develop STEM skills.

The Deep Creek Watershed Foundation is hosting the anniversary evening fundraiser at the Red Barn Inn and Events. The evening will feature Thomas Pandolfi, a wonderful pianist who will entertain us with Gershwin music as well as some classical pieces.

Garrett County Public Schools has adopted new quarantine and isolation guidelines as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Maryland Department of Health (MDH), and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Garrett Regional Medical Center provided local aspiring nurses with an 8-week paid externship program to gain hands-on and valuable experience in the healthcare field: Medical-Surgical Nursing (4 weeks), Surgical (1 week), Emergency Department (1 week), and the Intensive Care Unit (1 week).

Wednesday September 7

Did you hear? The County United Way collected school supplies here locally as part of their Stuff the Bus effort! I’ll try to get the totals of what was donated to you tomorrow. Pictured below are the volunteers who unloaded the bus at the Garrett County Board of Education offices.

I saw online that the Kindness for Keira group is collecting school supplies throughout the month of September.

The Garrett County Traffic and Transportation Advisory Committee reminds everyone that motorists will be sharing the road with the school buses.

Garrett County Public Schools Food & Nutrition Services is happy to present the TITAN Family Portal. Through the TITAN Family Portal, parents can set balance reminders and low balance alerts, monitor transactions, submit Free/Reduced online applications, and safely process one-time or automatic payments.

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) Safety and Security Manager, Mr. Clark Warnick, is requesting adult and student volunteers to participate in a reunification training program to be conducted on the afternoon of September 21, 2022. The drill will take place at the CARC at Garrett College.

The GCPS Transportation Department would like to remind all students, parents, and community members that our buses will be running starting Tuesday, also.

A reminder! The only public beach access to Deep Creek Lake is at Deep Creek Lake State Park and, through Labor Day, the entrance fee is $3 per Maryland resident and $5 per non-Maryland resident. After Labor Day, the fee is $3 per Maryland vehicle & $5 per non-Maryland vehicle.

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) announced the launch of the new Maryland Rebuilds grant program, designed to support and enhance the State’s early childhood education community.

The Garrett County Health Department announces the final series of low-cost rabies clinics for 2022. The vaccination of dogs, cats, and ferrets will begin Monday, September 12, and conclude Saturday, September 17.

The Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) Transportation Department has made multiple updates to bus routes throughout the county for the coming school year.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. The public is invited to participate in a local event today from 6–8 PM, at the Glades Park Pavilion at 10 Spruce Lane, Oakland. The Stories of Hope & Candlelight Vigil is designed to raise awareness that overdose affects all walks of life and is preventable.

Governor Larry Hogan has ordered the Maryland Flag lowered to half-staff for International Overdose Awareness Day.

The Oakland Police Department is investigating a destruction of property incident that occurred during the nighttime hours of August 24, 2022, at the Oakland Golf Course. An unknown person or persons drove a vehicle onto the golf course, causing damage to the grass. Anyone with information in reference to the investigation is asked to call the Oakland Police Department at 301-334-2100, the Garrett County Sheriff’s Department at 301-334-1911, or Garrett County Crime Solvers at http://www.garrettcountycrimesolvers.org.

The Maryland Park Service was awarded 15 improvement project grants (for few local projects, too) by the Friends of Maryland State Parks through the organization’s program, “Small Grants, Big Impact!” This funding is for projects that focus on conservation, environmental education, and outdoor recreation, and are important additions benefitting Maryland State Parks and their millions of visitors.

Read more about investments in rural Maryland through various funds and councils including the Rural Maryland Prosperity Investment Fund (RMPIF) and the Maryland Agricultural Education and Rural Development Assistance Fund (MAERDAF). Over $8 million was announced for FY 2023!

The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce is once again seeking nominations from Chamber members for Honorary Golden Ambassador. If you are interested in nominating someone for this distinction, please submit tour nomination by September 9.

Environmental Health Services of the Garrett County Health Department reports the county’s second case of laboratory-confirmed rabies for the year 2022. The encounter occurred in the area of Old Morgantown Road on July 6, 2022, between a dog and a raccoon.

Garrett Regional Medical Center has an upcoming information session on September 14, 2022, from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the Oakland hospital location for participants interested in learning more about the Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Program offered at GRMC.
