The Deep Creek Lake Lions is pleased to announce the formal opening of a new public disc golf course at the McHenry Community Park on BumbleBee Rd. The Glades at Meshach Run is a 9-hole, free-to-play disc golf course. Disc golf is similar to conventional golf, with throwing discs taking the place of balls and raised metal baskets taking the place of holes.

At the behest of Rep. Will you see a rocket in the skies? It won’t quite be visible here in Garrett County but NASA at Wallops Island has plans to launch a rocket between 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM tonight, weather permitting. This rocket launch will be visible throughout the Eastern Shore of MD, all of Delaware except maybe Wilmington City, most of Southern MD, and the western shore of the Bay as far north as Harford and Cecil counties at the top of the Bay.

The world’s only mountaintop whitewater course, located in Garrett County atop Wisp Resort, is more than just a family-oriented recreational activity. On Saturday, August 9, a local effort to provide training for swift water rescue to several Volunteer Fire Departments in Garrett County took place.

Crews were able to complete the step of replacing the field lights on the Northern Garrett High School (NGHS) football field this past week. The lights were turned on for the first time Thursday, August 11, around 9:30 PM. The lighting project upgrades the previous lighting on the field while being more energy efficient.

The pool at Dans Mountain State Park will be closed from August 22 through August 26 and August 29 through September 2 due to a shortage of lifeguards as staff return to school. All scheduled pool parties will be honored. The pool will otherwise be open through Labor Day, September 5, from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM daily.

The Food and Nutrition Services Department (FNS) of Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) has announced that the federally funded program for free meals will come to an end next Thursday, August 25th, 2022. As food service continues to transition back to pre-pandemic standards, students may still qualify for free or reduced-price meals for the coming school year by filling out a Meal Application.

County United Way will be having their annual “Stuff the Bus” school supply drive to benefit students in Garrett County has returned this year. Stuff the Bus will take place today, Friday, August 12, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in the Walmart parking lot in Oakland. Walmart is helping by allowing a bus to be parked in their parking lot so that volunteers can fill it with school supplies.
