In accordance with the Garrett County Public Schools calendar, there will be a 3-hour early student dismissal tomorrow, Thursday, December 23, 2021, to begin the winter break. All schools and GCPS offices will close at 1:30 p.m. that day and will remain closed through reopening on Monday, January 3, 2022.

The Garrett County Health Department has openings available in their TOPS – Taking Off Pounds Sensibly – weight-loss support group. The group meets each Wednesday from 4-5:15 p.m. at the GCHD office in Oakland. Call 301-334-7730 to find out more or to sign up. TOPS, a nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss support organization, encourages members to make small, steady lifestyle changes that provide lasting weight loss and better health.

Garrett County Public Schools will be conducting an active assailant drill on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, with the staff and students at Southern Middle School. School Resource Officers and other law enforcement and/or emergency personnel will be on-site for the duration of the drill. Parents and community members should be aware that the training activity is just a drill and not an actual emergency in progress.

Over 22,700 trout were stocked this past week by crews across Maryland; included in the total count were trout stocked in the following Garrett County waters:

• Casselman River (delayed harvest): rainbow trout
• Deep Creek Lake: golden and rainbow trout
• Youghiogheny River (delayed harvest): brown and rainbow trout

Maryland will increase access to free and reduced-price school meals as one of eight states selected by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to participate in its Direct Medicaid pilot project.

Food Basket Giveaway delivery will take place the week of December 20 throughout Crellin and beyond.

There is no indication that the national Dec 17 social media threats have any credibility; however, Garrett County Public Schools and local law enforcement will continue to monitor social media and will actively investigate any specific threat in our community. The community is encouraged not to share these messages online but to report any such threats to local law enforcement.

The American Red Cross, which provides 40% of the country’s blood, is facing historically low blood supply levels. Garrett County Health Department in Oakland will be having blood donations this Friday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Donors are urged to schedule an appointment now by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

I just read about the “Pennies for Premies” fundraiser on Facebook. Mel Smith is working to collect 41200 pennies or $412.00 (one dollar for every day she was a patient as a premie.) This money will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in honor of Mel and other premature babies.

We had a very successful Global Fat Tire Bike Day event! It was SO good to see about 30 participants — a majority of whom had not ever been on a fat bike nor biking in the winter! Accident Husky Pups are holding a “MistleTOES Sock Drive”. Initially, the goal was 700 pairs of socks to gift to residents in our county’s nursing homes and assisted living facilities…and on day two of collection 640 pairs were counted so the new goal is 1400 pairs of socks by December 10th! The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police is renewing its commitment to helping the state’s children have a joyful holiday season with its annual “Boatload of Toys” drive, collecting donations of new and unopened toys for local children.
