Garrett County Celebrates Maryland Economic Development Week

In recognition of Maryland Economic Development Week celebrated October 21-25, 2024, Garrett County Business Development, a division of the Garrett County Department of Community Development, is proud to highlight the vital work it continues to do in fostering economic growth and enhancing our local community. Through its strategic programs, the department plays a pivotal role in supporting the business community, driving job creation, and promoting sustainable development across the region.

As a key driver of local economic expansion, the department works with businesses of all sizes by offering diverse resources and support, including economic development grants, incentive programs, and small business initiatives.

Major infrastructure projects like the Grantsville and Oakland Housing Projects and the Keyser’s Ridge Business Park development are poised to enhance infrastructure and deliver long-term economic benefits. The department’s efforts in tourism have resulted in a 53.7% increase in accommodation collections compared to 2019, bolstering Garrett County’s reputation as a premier tourist destination, while continued support for local farmers and emerging industries, such as hemp, is advancing the agricultural sector.

Additionally, ongoing broadband expansion initiatives will provide improved internet access to over 3,900 addresses, allowing residents and businesses to more fully engage in the digital economy.

Steve Kelley, Community Development Director, emphasized the importance of these initiatives: “Economic Development means different things to different people, but our ultimate success is reflected in the quality of life here for residents and visitors. The work being done throughout Garrett County demonstrates our commitment to building a stronger, more prosperous community.”

Kim Durst, Manager of Business Development, added, “Garrett County is dedicated to creating a thriving economic environment, and these initiatives reflect our ongoing efforts to foster sustainable growth and opportunity throughout the region.”

As part of Maryland Economic Development Week, Garrett County continues to showcase its dedication to enhancing the local economy, improving infrastructure, and supporting businesses.
