If you’ve been around here a while, you may remember the previous owner — I distinctly remember one of the last posts she made was, “it’s a slow news day, check out this field guide to snakes“.

Each year, the average American household spends $2,471 on real-estate property taxes plus another $445 for residents of the 27 states with vehicle property taxes. In order to determine who pays the most relative to their state, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its 2022’s Property Taxes by State report, as well as accompanying videos.

Tuesday March 1

The weather today will be mostly sunny—high in the upper 40s and a low of 33. Southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Get ready for the 150th display at the Garrett County Visitor’s Center this March.

Oakland has received 10.8 inches of snow and 3.33 inches of rain in the month of February. Also, the average high temperature was 43.9 and the average low temperature was 15.2.

Face-coverings will be optional effective 3/1/2022 for all Garrett County Public Schools. As a result of this action, GCPS is reviewing other components of the GCPS Reopening and Recovery Plan that are directly impacted by the face-covering decision and the most recent CDC guidelines.

The Garrett County Commission for Women (GCCW) is accepting applications for its 2022-2023 academic year $500 scholarships. The Commission established the scholarship project to help women residents of Garrett County complete their educational requirements, leading to a degree or certificate beyond the high school level.

Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. Tonight will be a slight chance of snow and freezing rain before 10pm, then a slight chance of snow between 10pm and 11pm. Patchy fog before 8pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 18. West wind 6 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Saturday — fat bike ride day — will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 34 and a low around 23. West wind around 7 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Sunday will be sunny, with a high near 40 and a low around 17. West wind 8 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.

At a special session, which was held in a virtual format and live-streamed for public view, Superintendent Barbara Baker recommended that Garrett County Schools adopt a resolution to make face-coverings (masks) optional for both students and staff pending the required approval of the AELR.

Thursday February 24

The weather today will likely be freezing rain. Snow and sleet are likely in the morning, and It will then rain in the afternoon. Cooler with highs around 30. East winds of 5 to 10 mph. The chance of precipitation is 70%.

A winter storm watch has been issued for our area and the storm is expected to bring significant freezing rain accumulations. Total ice accumulations of up to three-tenths of an inch are possible. Snow and sleet accumulations less than one inch are also possible, creating dangerous travel conditions — Garrett County Public Schools will shift to virtual learning today and Friday, February 24-25, 2022.

Wednesday February 23

The weather today will be cloudy, with scattered rain showers in the morning. It will then be partly sunny in the afternoon—highs in the lower 50s. Temperature falls into the upper 30s in the afternoon—west winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 Mph. The chance of rain is 50%.

The Maryland State Board of Education voted Tuesday afternoon to make school face mask policies a local decision — but that’s not the final word. The board’s 12-2 vote paves the way for the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review to take the final vote. The committee approved the current masking regulation and will have to be the one to lift it.

To commemorate Garrett County’s Sesquicentennial and National Library Week, the Ruth Enlow Library is holding a bookmark design contest! Stop in at a local branch for an entry form and your winning design may be printed and available at all branches.

Join Kitzmiller Library for Children’s Story Time today as they look, listen, sing, and play while learning through stories, crafts, and other fun activities. This program is geared for children ages 3-5.

Kid’s Book Club is a book discussion group for children in grades 3 through 5. Members will be provided with books to read and discuss with the group. Meetings include activities and snacks.

The 2022 MPSSAA Indoor Track Championships will be hosted at the Baltimore Armory from February 16 – February 22. The MPSSAA plans to have the state finals live-streamed through the NFHS Network. However, per facility policies, spectators are not permitted. The following state championship schedule will be used, pending any weather delays to regional events.

Registration is recommended, but walk-ins will be accepted. Monday, February 21, 2022 and Friday, February 25, 2022.

The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future is hitting delays and experiencing funding disputes as state leaders begin to roll out the program.

Note that as of 7:30 am, Table Rock Road and Silver Knob Road are temporarily closed due to downed trees on power lines. Crews are working on these areas but I have not heard of a reopening yet.

DNR has stocked over 6,000 trout including North Branch Potomac River, Kitzmiller: golden and rainbow trout, and in Westernport: golden and rainbow trout

The Garrett County Commission for Women (GCCW) is accepting applications for the Maureen R. Sharps Scholarship for the academic year 2022-2023. The group is granting one $5000 scholarship, awarded as $2,500 each semester, for an individual seeking a degree in Education or a related area.

At the Board of Education meeting on January 11, 2022, Superintendent Barbara Baker and Chief Academic Officer Nicole Miller presented the Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) Inclement Weather Plan for Virtual Learning Days.

Wednesday February 16

The Garrett County Health Department continues to conduct free testing at their Oakland Office and at the Garrett County Fairgrounds. In addition, a partnership with the Ruth Enlow Library System has provided a supply of take-home tests and KN95 masks to the branches for distribution to the public.

The Garrett County Health Department’s Play Hard, Live Clean (PHLC) healthy lifestyle campaign is designed to encourage youth to make good choices by recognizing and rewarding them for certain positive lifestyle accomplishments from kindergarten through graduation. Students in elementary and middle school recently completed the first challenge for this school year.

Happy Valentine’s Day!????

The weather today will be partly sunny. Scattered snow showers in the morning with little or no additional snow accumulation—highs in the lower 20s and a low of 12. West winds of 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph. Chance of snow 30%. Wind chill values are as low as 5 below. The chance of rain is 75%.

There was sort of a surprise snow over the weekend — I measured 2 inches yesterday morning and 2.25 inches this morning. It’s light and fluffy and oh-so pretty!

I’m planning on this: celebrate Valentine’s Day by cross-country skiing on a candlelit trail. The Turnpike Trail (blazed green) at New Germany State Park will be lined with candle luminaries until 8pm and cross-country ski rentals will be available throughout the evening. My friend just shared that they will be grooming the trail and that should make for a good evening skiing!
