The weather for today will be partly sunny, with a high near 78. A chance of showers before noon and thunderstorms between noon and 3pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Showers mainly before 8pm …. so they say.

Fingers crossed again that the “Fire on the Mountain” fireworks display goes off successfully tonight at dusk.

The best views are along 219 and, I will remind you the robotics team is fundraising by selling parking at The Lodges at Sunset Village and the Garrett County Fairgrounds. Both excellent viewing locations.

Also, we wanted to mention the Deep Creek Discovery center will be offering Fire Tower tours every Thursday in July (from 1:00 to 3:00) — see one of the best views of Deep Creek Lake this afternoon!

If your pet is new and hasn’t been exposed to fireworks yet, remember he or she may have trouble. If the noise and/or light is giving your pet anxiety:

1. Act normally around your dog. Pretend as though the fireworks aren’t happening.
2. Play white sound or music.
3. Close the curtains.
4. Distract your dog with a game or a puzzle treat.
5. Put a Thundershirt on your dog.
6. Make an anti-anxiety wrap out of an elastic bandage.
7. Keep the dog on a leash if you go outside.

Remember not everyone (and every pet) likes fireworks.

Is everyone is on “holiday-time” or is it just me?

According to AccuWeather Global Weather Center, today will be the busiest travel day for the July 4th holiday. But, notes, if you’re heading back to Washington, D.C. on Sunday, they say the worst time to travel in the city will be between 10:30am – 12:30pm.

This morning, the Farmer’s Market begins at 10:00am. This week we should see the first sweet corn and tomatoes.

Stage Wisp Kickoff Double-Header with Hillbilly Gypsies tonight — it’s a double-header on the 3rd & 4th of July beginning at 6pm. Check out the Farmers/Silly/Art Market before the show and bring your lawn chairs and a blanket.

If you’re on the Southern-end of the county, the Broadford Park Fireworks are tonight at dusk! Admission is $3 per person, children 8 and under $1. The Community Concert Band and an octet of singers from the Choral Society will be performing at Pavilion #1.

The weekend was very humid and we had some crazy lightning, thunder and “gully-washing” rains on Saturday night. I know there were several flooded roads in the southern end of the county so we hope you all are staying safe!

In celebration of Coney Days in Lonaconing, nearby Dans Mountain State Park will be featuring a “Dollar Dip” at the (heated) pool July 3. Admission to the pool will be $1 per person for the entire day and children 5 and under will get in free.

Addictions counseling is a new program available at Garrett College developed to address the ever-growing opioid and substance abuse crisis. Hero Dogs is a Maryland 501c-3 organization places service dogs with veterans and first-responders with disabilities. An introduction event will be held for those interested in learning more about Hero Dogs as a potential applicant, volunteer, or donor on July 21, 2019 in Laytonsville, MD.

The Maryland DNR is offering the next summer workshop of “Becoming an Outdoors-Woman” this August 9-11, 2019. This workshop offers outdoors skills classes specifically for women 18 years of age and older. Classes are small in size and are designed to be as hands-on as possible, giving participants enough knowledge to further pursue their interests. Register here.

Here’s a photo I captured on the way home last night. It had been raining off and on all evening but the moon peeking out from behind some pretty awesome clouds caught my eye off to the left. I thought I would be able to catch it on the hill behind Wal-Mart (hey, what are you gonna do!) but there were trees in the way of my view. So, I did a bit of moon-chasing and worked my way over to Memorial Drive and the old Armory and here’s what I got with my phone. I think it looks like a painting!

The Maryland MVA is launching a two-year pilot program to test new digital license plate technology on 20 MDOT MVA fleet vehicles and two Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) vehicles. The state is one of the first on the East Coast to test the new digital plates.

University of Maryland is working to save the state’s dying bees but asks for your help. You don’t have to be an expert to help — “Plant a garden, plant a pollinator garden. Buy local honey and don’t use herbicides and pesticides,” said a researcher.

So, I saw this little bear cub yesterday on my bike ride — I was riding the route for the Fabulous 44 of the Garrett Gran Fondo — and with great relaxation and the perfect ambient noise of nature comes startlingly close run-ins with creatures bigger than me. Luckily, I was heading uphill and I saw this guy playfully slide down the embankment and onto the road in front and away from me. But, where there’s a cub there has to be a momma and I was nervous to continue on my ride. So I waited… and waited… and waited and one of the perks of leisurely riding back roads with no cell phone service is that there’s no traffic either. So I waited about 20 minutes in this spot listening to the sounds of the forest. Finally, a wonderful family on vacation here made a wrong turn and ended up driving up to me. I flagged them down and asked if they would go slow for the next mile-ish so I could ride “with” them to get safely passed the bear. I honestly don’t feel like I was in any danger but, just in case, they graciously followed behind me until we got to the end of this road.

The County has published a public notice regarding the Goal for Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Participation on Airport Construction Projects.

I have just heard that the bicycling Race Across America (RAAM) time station 47 in Deep Creek (at Trader’s Landing) will NOT be manned this year. The racers still will be coming through 219 (from Red House to Route 40) so please be cautious when approaching any of the riders and cheer them on when you see them! The solo men’s leader came through at about 1-2am this morning and is now passing the Cumberland, MD time station.

The Ruth Enlow Library will hold their Summer Reading Club this year called “A Universe of Stories”. All programs are free, and children can participate in the reading program by completing a log of books (of their choosing) to read during the summer and/or attending the events. Completed reading logs (one per child) will be entered into Grand Prize Drawings at the local branches. Registration for the program opened on June 1st and participants can register online at https://www.relib.net/src-register.

Tonight is the Cancer Support Group at Garrett Regional Medical Center. Meets the first and third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the hospital boardroom. It is open to everyone – people with cancer, caregivers, kids, relatives, friends, anyone. We sit and vent and laugh and eat, etc. It’s very informal and comforting.

Wisp Resort has recently joined the NSAA Climate Challenge — an effort to reduce carbon emissions and energy usage across the resort.

The Garrett County Health Department reminds us to know our teens’ whereabouts this summer. Also, discuss the dangers of substance abuse regularly and establish summertime rules to keep them safe.

The Airmen of Note is the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force and will be performing a free concert on Wednesday, June 26 at the Garrett College CARC. The show begins at 6:00pm. Reserve your ticket today!

Maryland Humanities is pleased to bring Jacques Cousteau, Matthew Henson, and Grace O’Malley to life through the Chautauqua living history series. This series called “Making Waves” and is part of the Chautauqua “Then and Now” festival to be held in Mountain Lake Park, MD (the original home of Chautauqua in Maryland) — including three full days of activities and special presentations.

Garrett College’s Adventure Sports Management program now offers Stand up Paddleboard (SUP) instruction as a result of a grant awarded from the Maryland Agricultural Education & Rural Development Assistance Fund (MAERDAF). The grant provided for the purchase of SUP equipment; a professor of adventure sports to become a certified American Canoe Association (ACA) SUP Instructor; and funding for a group of four students to also become certified ACA SUP instructors.

Troopers from the McHenry Barrack are currently investigating the theft of a KTM 50 SX mini motorcycle. The vehicle was stolen on 6/13/19 or 6/14/19 and was parked in the front yard of the residence when it was stolen. Back in November, the Deep Creek Lake Lion’s Club donated to Aaron Cuppet’s Eagle Scout project to create a public memorial site for the crew of Buzz-14, a B52 bomber carrying nuclear weapons which crashed in Garrett County in January 1964. In late May, there was a dedication ceremony for the site at 7747 Westernport Rd.

Ms. Barbara Baker, Superintendent of Schools, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. John Hummel to the position of principal at Southern Middle School beginning in the 2019-2020 school year. Mr. Hummel holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Youth Ministries from Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, and a Master of Education Degree in School Counseling from Frostburg State University. He also holds a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate with Administrator I and II, and School Counseling endorsements.

From the Maryland DNR: Please allow us to introduce one of the more interesting species found in Maryland. The Eastern Hog-nosed snake is non-venomous, but has a couple of tricks, one of which may make you think twice if you encounter it. If threatened, it will initially hiss and spread its neck like a cobra’s hood. If that doesn’t work then it’ll go in the other direction and roll over and play dead (even letting its tongue hang out).
