A reminder that MD State Park Annual Passes are available — $75 for Marylanders; $100 for out-of-state visitors. This pass is unlimited day-use admission and boat launching at state parks, and a 10 percent discount on state-operated concessions and boat rentals.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal would like to share basic lightning safety tips as Maryland continues to experience thunderstorms with damaging lightning strikes — read more safety tips here.

• If you can hear thunder, you are in striking distance of lightning. Look for shelter inside a home, large building, or hard-topped vehicle immediately.
• There is no safe place outside. Places with only a roof on golf courses, sports fields, and picnic areas are not safe during a lightning storm. Small sheds should not be used as a source of shelter.
• If a person is struck by lightning, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Garrett County Board of Education unanimously voted to accept the bid of an outside consultant (Educational Facilities Planning LLC) to help Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) develop a strategic facilities plan. A SFC (Strategic Facilities Committee) was formed and membership includes local business leaders, community partners, parents, and several members of GCPS staff. All of the meetings are public and information regarding the meeting times and locations are publicized far in advance. Members of the community are welcome to attend so their voice can be heard in the public and open forum. More information can be found on their website here.

There is a Notice of Investigation issued by the MD State Fire Marshal — on August 2, 2019 there was a fire on Swanton Road. The primary cause is determined to be arson. Anyone with information is requested to contact the State Fire Marshal’s Office at 301-766-3888.

The Commissioner’s Public Meeting is tonight at Friendsville Town Hall. The agenda is here and the meeting begins at 5:30pm.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources invites artists to submit their original works for the 46th Annual Migratory Game Bird stamp design contest by Nov. 1. I had a chance to visit the Garrett County Agriculture Fair last night! So much fun!

The fair continues tonight and tomorrow! Today is a pee wee swine show, the engineering and skill-a-thon awards, cow patty bingo, mud bog and performance by Tyler Reese Tritt. Tomorrow is the wood cutting contest, the Kickin It Country, John Wyrick Band, and Gospel Harmony Boys. And, much more — here’s the full schedule.

My wife Jean and her Civic Club buddies were working the Rotary Fries booth last evening and posed for this action photo (l to r – Joan, Jean, Judi and Marilyn).  While it was rainy, they had fun while volunteering for a good cause. Now I am hungry for some of those great fries!

Speaking of the fair, I drive by the Garrett County fairgrounds a few times a day and it seems from the full parking lot that attendance is booming this year.  Wednesday evening rain aside, I think the weather has definitely been cooperating in getting people out to the fair.

Today’s events at the Fair include a pedal tractor pull, beef showmanship, the truck drag race, and Restless Heart for the evening entertainment. Admission price is $15 for all rides, attractions and track events. View the Full Fair Schedule Here.

The Women’s Networking Happy Hour is today from 5:00pm-7pm at Black Bear Tavern.

A new grant award from the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) will 100%-fund the construction of eight corporate hangars at the Garrett County Airport. This is good news as the airport is important to local citizens and businesses and it had run out of hangar space.

It’s not too late to get yourself, your child or your grandchild enrolled and registered at Garrett College. The Fall Semester starts in early September and they have New Student Advising Days scheduled for August 7th and 16th, with a week set aside for last-minute walk-ins set through August 30th. It’s only the beginning of August, but it’s not too early to begin planning for fall activities. The Chamber of Commerce has announced that organizations wanting to participate in the 52nd Annual Autumn Glory Grand Feature Parade must submit their applications to the Chamber by Friday, September 6, 2019. The Farmers Market is today from 10am – 1pm and we’re in the thick of it! While there, we took a side trip to Swallow Falls, and walked the Swallow Falls Canyon Trail. I got some beautiful pictures of all four waterfalls. Tips for park questers: When we know the quest is art-related, Hannah carries a set of colored pencils to give her a larger variety of colors she can use to draw things. The Department of Public Works – Roads Division advises the public that road maintenance will be taking place on River Road on the date of Tuesday, July 30, 2019.  River Road will be closed to traffic from the hours of 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. between the Crab Run intersection and the Pennsylvania line. The Deep Creek Watershed Foundation is auctioning off a FLYING SCOT #16 that was graciously donated to the Foundation by the family of the late General Joseph P. Franklin, a long-time resident of Thousand Acres. The Flying Scot sailboat in the listing photos will be sold to the highest bidder via email auction format closing on August 16th. The Garrett County Arts Council has announced the 2019 Artist Studio Tours (and pre-tour Artist Preview Party) to be held this weekend! The Studio Tours are a FREE opportunity to visit artists and their studios to share details about their creative inspiration, technical processes and the tools and materials they use to make their hand-crafted work. Here’s an article on education and our Maryland neighbor to the East, Allegany County — A research team discovered the school system in Maryland with the greatest number of high-poverty elementary schools beating the odds in math. I don’t have the stats in front of me but Garrett County schools are also excellent-performing rural schools with a significant population of students in need of free or reduced lunch.
