Garrett College recently announced the upcoming Explore Garrett Open House will take place on Saturday, April 2nd, beginning at 9:30 AM and ending at 12:00 NN. The event will be held in the Daniel E. Offutt III STEM Center of the McHenry campus of Garrett College.

This past Wednesday, Superintendent Barbara Baker and the Garrett County Board of Education (GCBOE) held a Special Board Listening Session. Superintendent Baker and the GCBOE would like to remind all students, staff, parents, and community members that the purpose of this meeting was to gain additional insight from stakeholders on the feasibility of the proposed Grade-Band Alignment Plan as it pertains to the southern end schools.

In addition, Ms. Barbara Baker, Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. Mark Greene, Manager of Communications & Public Relations, presented the Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) Communication Plan “A Path Forward” at the monthly Board meeting Tuesday, March 8, 2022. The Garrett County Women’s Hall of Fame was established through the efforts of the Garrett County Commission for Women and inducted the first members back in 1995. Its purpose is to honor local women who have made substantial or outstanding contributions to the economic, political, and cultural life of Garrett County.

Up to three women will be inducted each year. Both historical and contemporary women are eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame (nomination packets are available until April 1) as these women represent the past, present, and future vision of Garrett County.

According to a survey of 3,145 college students, students from Maryland are less likely to stay sober this spring break – however, a significant 27% say they will be practicing sobriety.

The weather today will be increasing clouds, with a high near 66 and a low around 43. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon and a chance of showers, mainly after 3am.

The PHLC campaign is in its fifth year. Play Hard, Live Clean is designed to be a campaign that subtly and consistently reminds students across the grade levels that a healthy lifestyle takes practice and repetition. “The idea is that students will hear about the PHLC challenges year after year in their classrooms, along with the health lessons that are already being taught,” stated McLaughlin, “and maybe one day embrace one (or more) of the habits they have learned and practiced.”

Graduation for Garrett County Public Schools has been set for Saturday, June 4, 2022 in the Ag Heritage Hall at the Garrett County Fairgrounds.

Fifteen weeks before the primary election, a trial opens Tuesday in which Republicans challenge a Democratic map of Maryland’s congressional district boundary lines. Here’s why it matters to you: “Maryland’s last two congressional redistricting cycles have involved extreme partisan gerrymandering,” said a brief filed last week by attorneys for a group led by Del. Neil Parrott, a Washington County Republican running for the seat of Democratic Rep. David Trone in a district stretching from Montgomery County through Western Maryland. Republican Del. Kathy Szeliga is among the leaders of the second GOP group.

The weather today will continue to be rain showers likely before 3pm, then rain and snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 38. and a low around 25. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

A strong area of low pressure will likely move up the East Coast during the first half of the weekend. Although its exact track and strength remains uncertain, there is an Enhanced Severe Storm Threat for damaging wind gusts late Friday night through Saturday. At least scattered instances of tree and power line damage are possible, and could result in blocked roadways or power outages.

Additionally, there is also a Slight Winter Storm Threat Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning. Accumulating snow and sub-zero wind chill temperatures are possible. If the threat materializes, it may cause travel disruptions.

Maryland’s six casinos brought in nearly $163 million in February revenue, a 29.1% increase from the same period a year prior when the buildings were operating under COVID-19 capacity restrictions.
