Here’s a message from Bob Sutton, President, Property Owners’ Association of Deep Creek Lake: “The POA became aware of the potential of large solar farms in the watershed with the county having no zoning regulations for these systems. We suggested along with other entities that the county should consider modifying the 1970’s zoning to include restrictions for large solar arrays…”

Local basketball coach, Tom Bosley, of Southern Garrett High School has been selected as the head coach of the east USA All-Stars in the McDonald’s All American game in Chicago on March 29, 2022. This game features the top 24 high school players in the nation.

We received some snow accumulation overnight of about 3.25″ (by my measurements here in Oakland).

Note: The state’s Primitive Deer Hunt will be open Feb. 1-3 statewide. Hunters may use primitive hunting devices — long bows, recurve bows, flintlock, or sidelock percussion muzzleloaders — to hunt sika and white-tailed deer during these days.

The Red Cross blood supply remains at dangerously low levels. As a thank-you for coming out to help save lives during this blood crisis, Krispy Kreme is offering blood donors a free Original Glazed® dozen through the end of January. The Garrett County Health Department has begun to distribute free masks as promised by Governor Larry Hogan. To date, the Health Department has distributed over 8,000 masks to partner agencies and has requested more KN-95 masks from the Maryland Department of Health.

Would you be crazy enough to ride your bike when the temperature is only 7 degrees?! A group of bikers did just that over the weekend… the top distance rider — and my new friend Shawn — did 15 miles through the woods at the Deep Creek Lions Club Park.

The White House is to make 400 million N95 masks available for free. Do you know the difference between the N95 and the KN95 respirators? The N95 is approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, or NIOSH, which regulates masks in the United States while the KN95 is made to meet Chinese standards, and isn’t NIOSH-approved.

Deep Creek Lake has been named a top location to look for a winter vacation home by Vacasa. Coming in at number 4, DCL market has a cap rate of 6.2% and a median home price of $439,367. “Given the pandemic, a second home offers a sense of security and personal space that a hotel or vacation rental may not,” said Joe Robison, data reporter at online moving resource MoveBuddha.com. “And with work-from-home protocols, the freedom to move between two different home offices could be tremendously attractive as it offers a change of scenery without the unknown variables of booking a vacation rental.”

Due to the weather, there will be no meals distributed on Tuesday, January 18th. All meals will be distributed on Thursday, January 20th at the same times. All meals are available to any child 18 and under – free of charge – regardless of whether they are enrolled in Garrett County Public Schools or not.

A COVID Positive At-Home Test Report Portal is now available for Maryland residents to alert the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) of a positive result from a COVID-19 at-home test. Patients can use the instructions provided with each test kit or patients can visit https://covidlink.maryland.gov/selfreport to report positive results directly to MDH.

In accordance with the school calendar, today, January 14, 2022 is a three hour early dismissal for Garrett County Public School students. The staff will be participating in staff development activities in the afternoon.

A recent study found that in Maryland, 8.3% of adults aged 25 and older live with their parents, compared to 7.3% of adults at the national level.

There are some “rumblings” about snowfall expected this weekend but we’re reminded by meteorologist Justin Berk that long-range forecasts are generally not reliable.

The Garrett County Health Department received notification of a grim milestone as the county recorded its 100th death attributed to COVID-19 or its related complications. Since December 1st there has been a total of 15 Garrett County residents who have died as a result of COVID infection.
