Garrett College’s November 20th Joan Crawford Lecture Series will feature the College’s 22 international students, who represent 12 different countries. The 6:00 PM event will take place in the conference center of the Performing Arts Center at Garrett College.
Those in attendance will have an opportunity to sample popular cuisine from each student’s home country, including English tea and cookies, Croquetas Españolas, and Irish Stew. Students will also share interesting facts about their countries as well as popular activities and music.
Countries represented include: Australia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzogovina, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Liberia, South Sudan, Spain, United Kingdom, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.
“Our international students help the College create a richer, more culturally diverse environment,” said Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College’s president. “Garrett College has a long history of seeking out and nurturing international students, with strong support from our local community. This event is just one strategy we use to bring together our students and our community.”
Garett College’s offices of admissions, institutional compliance, and human resources are all event co-sponsors. The College held a similar, well-received event in spring 2024.
“Students appreciated the opportunity to share their culture with both the campus and local community,” said Shelley Menear, GC’s director of institutional compliance. “The event also allowed the College to enhance partnerships with community organizations such as the Civic Club of Oakland and Oakland Rotary.”
The Joan Crawford Lecture Series honors dynamic educator Joan R. Crawford, who died in 2010 after serving the Garrett College community for 30 years in a variety of faculty and staff roles. JCLS presentations are offered free of charge, and the public and community members are invited to attend.
