The Maryland State Board of Education and State Superintendent of Schools joined the newly selected 2022-2023 Teachers of the Year in a special recognition at the Maryland State Department of Education. With this prestigious designation, the teachers will form a cohort that will work together to support equity and excellence in education and address critical policy issues over the next year.

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Garrett County Celtic Fest and the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra!

At the Celtic Festival, I was representing the Garrett County Government and giving out the commemorative Friendsville coin! Here’s a snap taken by my friend Terah and her son / puppy Asher:

At the WVSO, I enjoyed the music for sure! And, my friend Tom won the silent auction and he was a guest conductor for a song! Very cool!

Students in the STARS classroom at Grantsville Elementary recently read the book Rolling Thunder by Kate Messner and illustrated by Greg Ruth. The students also received a visit from the group “Rolling to Remember” on Friday, May 13, 2022.

The Garrett County Health Department Clinic in Oakland will be having a vaccine schedule and COVID-19 testing today.

The Group Bike Ride will depart from the parking lot immediately in front of The Tiny Corner Bike Shop every Tuesday at 5:30 PM during the late spring, summer, and early fall. Riders are grouped by ability level, so no one gets left behind.

The Garrett County Public Schools Maintenance Department, Superintendent, and Board of Education, in conjunction with its construction partners on the Grantsville Elementary School project, have issued a revised timeline for the Facility Upgrade Project.

The GCPS Food & Nutrition Services Department announces the Summer Food Services Program. Meals are available to any child 18 years of age or under, free of charge, regardless of whether they are a GCPS student or not.

Garrett College recently announced the upcoming schedule for the summer Joan Crawford Lecture Series at the McHenry campus of Garrett College. Earlier this year, Garrett College was named a grant recipient of the American Rescue Plan: Humanities Grants for Libraries grant funding is being used to sponsor the summer series.

The Deep Creek Lake Lion’s Club is pleased to announce the soft opening of Garrett County’s first public disc golf course, The Glades at Meshach Run.

Join the naturalists at the Discovery Center to learn how to partake in one of the best pastimes Deep Creek has to off: fishing! Kids between 7-15 will learn skills that will help on their own fishing adventures. Registration is required.

Create a fun nature-related craft such as paper birds or pom pom bumblebees at Sang Run State Park.

The Board of County Commissioners has announced the Agenda for its upcoming public meeting to be held today, beginning at 4 PM. The public is invited to attend in person or via live stream on Facebook.

Oakland’s Little Yough Family Flicks summer movie series in the Oakland A&E District will return on June 16th! The Mayor and Town Council of Oakland, MD, and The Oakland Heritage Community Foundation, Inc. are gearing up to host ‘Little Yough Family Flicks’ a series of outdoor movies. The series will kick off Thursday, June 16th, 2022, with the 2021 film, “The Mitchells vs. the Machines”, sponsored by The Garrett County Judy Center.

The weather today will be showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 11am. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds and frequent lightning. High near 72 and a low around 49. West wind 5 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Hydrilla is a fast-growing aquatic invasive plant that scientists first found in Deep Creek Lake in 2013 and have been treating with a herbicide annually since 2014. The herbicide treatment takes place each summer and is again planned for the summer of 2022. For an overview of treatment locations and plans, including other information related to the treatment process, please visit the Deep Creek Lake Natural Resource Management Area website.

It is vacation season at Deep Creek Lake, and many anglers are looking for some fun fishing action. At the upper end of the lake, the coves are holding largemouth bass and chain pickerel. Northern pike can be found at the mouths of many of the coves. Floating docks around the lake provide shade and structure for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Deep grass provides cover for a mix of walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie and yellow perch. Rocky points are a good place to find smallmouth bass in the morning and evening hours. The dam face depths often hold the best opportunities for finding trout.

The next two Saturdays, June 4 and June 11, are license-free fishing days in Maryland waters, so don’t let them pass without taking someone out who has not been fishing in a while, or someone who has never fished before. The last free fishing day of the year will be July 4.

The TV show, Barnwood Builders, on Magnolia network, recently spent the day with the artisans at Spruce Forest Artisan Village. Johnny Jett spent hours with Gary Yoder in learning carving. The Town of Oakland is holding a special Council meeting to discuss outdoor dining in Oakland today – Tuesday, May 24 at 3:00 pm at City Hall. Business owners and town residents that would like to share a short comment may do so during a specified time at the podium.

The Deep Creek Watershed Foundation is offering a 2022 Virtual Brunch and Learn Educational Series, which is being facilitated by University of Maryland Extension in Garrett County. The next session will begin at 10am on May 25 and is free and open to anyone that is interested in learning more about Deep Creek Lake and surrounding watersheds.
