The Southern Garrett Bass Slayers participated in a conservation project with the Deep Creek Lake Management building concrete Reef Balls to submerge in the lake to create fish habitat. Thanks to slayers Aryeh Harvey, Clinton Harvey, Allen Keefer and Mark Keefer for their hard work and special thanks to former Bass Slayer Quinn Iden (now works for lake management) and his co-worker Matt Jones for including them in this project.

Maryland DNR is offering its annual Migratory Game Bird Stamp contest again, which is open to residents and nonresidents until November 5, 2021. The winning entry will appear on the 2022-2023 Migratory Game Bird Stamp required to hunt migratory game birds in Maryland.

Garrett County’s Planning & Land Management Department is updating the Land Preservation and Recreation Plan and is seeking public input through an online survey. They are looking to gather public feedback on the outdoor recreation demands, identify improvements, and establish priorities for the future development of parks, facilities, programs, and services within the community.

The Senior Health & Fitness Club at The CARC just announced two new classes this week! Included in the regular $20/month membership, Senior Strength Training will start, today, Monday & Wednesday at 11:15 and Hanna Somatics will start Wednesday at 10am.

The Garrett County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. The meeting will begin at 4:00 p.m. after which time the Board of Education will meet in executive session until 5:50 p.m. The Board of Education will reconvene for public session from 6:00 p.m. – 7:25 p.m.

The Maryland Department of Planning has added a map submission portal, which includes adjusted 2020 Census data. Map submissions will be reviewed by the Maryland Citizens Redistricting Commission prior to their drawing of the maps if received by Friday, September 24 at noon. Listening sessions will also be held this evening and tomorrow evening at 6pm. Additional submissions after the Citizens Commission has drawn their maps will also be accepted during the Round 3 meetings in October.

The Small Grants, Big Impact! Program is designed to inspire people from all backgrounds to connect with, celebrate, and support Maryland State Parks and their community-based programs. Through its Small Grants program the nonprofit provides $1,000 grants to state parks to help them achieve their mission.

Nearby West Virginia is experiencing a coronavirus surge — Dr. Clay Marsh says “the delta variant has entered that explosive growth phase” and even after the surge levels off, it will have left behind devastating results. Last Wednesday’s positivity rate in the state was nearly 18-percent of all tests administered. There are now more that 22-thousand active cases, which is a far cry from the fewer than one thousand the state reported just 60 days ago.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced that archery hunting for white-tailed and sika deer has opened statewide and continues through Jan. 31, 2022. Archers may also use vertical longbows and vertical recurve bows Feb. 1-3, 2022 during the second annual Primitive Deer Hunt Days.

Tonight at 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm is the Garrett County Rabies Program. Garrett County experienced four cases of laboratory-confirmed rabies in 2020. Protect your pets and your family from the threat of this disease by bringing your dogs, cats, and ferrets to receive a rabies shot for $5.

Also, today September 13 at 5:30 pm is the first of two Homebuyer Program Workshops.

Large numbers of birds are predicted to be migrating over Garrett County tonight and this weekend!

This year we commemorate the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001. Life changed that day and we remember and honor each of the fallen heroes. Within a short drive from Deep Creek Lake, you can visit the Flight 93 Memorial. This weekend, chalk artists have gathered to complete 40 portraits of the passengers and crew members of Flight 93.

We have heard the official word. The Autumn Glory Grand Feature parade is ON (organized by the Town of Oakland) and they have extended the float application deadline.

Hospice of Garrett County posted that they compose a list of paid caregivers that are available to provide in-home care throughout our community, and currently there is a greater need than normal. Deep Creek Lake is a manmade impoundment that is Maryland’s largest body of freshwater. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources manages the lake, shoreline, and adjacent Natural Resource Management Area and State Park. The Maryland Department of the Environment manages the water level and lake bottom. Brookfield Renewable owns and operates the hydroelectric dam, construction of which formed the lake in the 1920s. Garrett County manages the lake’s 40,000-acre watershed.

MD DNR secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio recently provided numerous updates to the activities at Deep Creek Lake, including:

• The State Lakes Protection and Restoration Fund, approved by Governor Hogan in 2018, provides $1 million a year for three years for state-owned lakes including Deep Creek Lake. This money has supported invasive hydrilla control, fish habitat installation, shoreline erosion control, and dredging.
• The Deep Creek Lake Launch Steward Program, a cooperative effort between Garrett College’s Natural Resource and Wildlife Technology program and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Stewards conduct voluntary boat inspections and educate the public about aquatic invasive species. Since 2016, the Stewards intercepted 29 vessels that carried aquatic invasive species, including zebra mussels, a species found in other nearby waters, thwarting their expansion into Deep Creek Lake.

Garrett County Schools will continue to use Schoology resources to support instruction.

Also, on September 9 at 7:00 pm The Oakland (MD) Old-Time Jam where musicians of all skill levels are invited to bring their fiddles, guitars, banjos, mandolins, etc., and play old-time Appalachian tunes at Our Town Theatre.

As Garrett County Public School gets underway this week, this means that motorists will again be sharing the road with the school buses. If a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing motorists meeting or overtaking the bus are required to stop at least 20 feet from the bus in either direction. The only exception is when there is a physical barrier dividing a four-lane roadway, then only vehicles following the bus are required to stop.

It’s not too late to register to attend this year’s Leadership Garrett County, a program developed and managed by Garrett College in partnership with the Garrett County Department of Business Development. Hear from local dignitaries, travel to and learn about local institutions, participate in lectures, and network with other emerging leaders in the class. The class meets monthly.

Texas Eastern Transmission will be performing maintenance, replacement and repair work to pipes and casings on Buffalo Run Road in Garrett County.  This work will close the road beginning Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at 12 p.m. and will continue through Friday, October 1, 2021 at 5 p.m.

The 17th annual Deep Creek Lake Art & Wine Festival, benefiting HART for Animals and Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) is this weekend! Featuring beautifully handcrafted works by local and regional artisans, more than 200 wines to taste from Maryland and national wineries, a lounge to watch college football games and purchase beer on tap, a cigar bar, live entertainment, food, silent auction, wine store, wine pairing dinners, lodging packages and more! The Deep Creek Lake Art & Wine Committee is requiring all vendors, sponsors, wine reps, volunteers, and committee members to wear masks. Hand sanitizer will be provided at each table, and the booth spaces will be spaced further apart than normal. We recommend that in between tastings to wear a mask. Disposable masks will be available (while supplies last). Things will be a bit different this year, but the fun will remain the same! Thank you for your support and patience!

NOTE: The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce has cancelled their annual kick-off dinner and craft show at the fairgrounds scheduled during the annual Autumn Glory celebration. The Oakland Volunteer Fire Department has also cancelled Fireman’s Parade and Oktoberfest events (typically on Thursday evening of the annual event).

As far as I have heard, the Town of Oakland is still planning on the Grand Feature Parade on Saturday, October 16, 2021. We will keep you posted!

Today is the first day of classes for Garrett County Public Schools. I am wishing all of the local students a great year!

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio announced $2.2 million in additional funding for Deep Creek Lake dredging. Speaking to a group at Garrett College, Secretary Riccio also discussed the state’s long-term commitment to water monitoring at the lake, ongoing efforts to prevent and combat aquatic invasive species, and work to protect and expand the lake’s freshwater fisheries.

The George Washington Whiskey Rebellion Fest, brought to you by the Community Trust Foundation, commemorates Washington’s last journey to Cumberland, when he arrived to put down the Whiskey Rebellion. This festival event happens this Friday, September 10, 2021 from 6 to 10 pm.

Southern Garrett High School is hoping to be able to build a Field House for the new athletic complex to provide team rooms, restrooms, a concession stand, a ticket booth, and necessary storage. The preliminary estimate for the installation of this Field House is $300,000 and they are collecting donations.

The high-temperature average was 81.6 and the low-temperature average was 63.6, and there were 6.29 inches of precipitation reported for August. I’ll be interested to see how Ida’s rains compare!

No worries, though. Garrett County reported The Garrett County Emergency Operations Center was activated on September 1 at 0557 hrs and has returned to normal operations at 0800 yesterday, September 2. No water rescues or major damages were reported.

Maryland Emergency Management reports: As Tropical Depression Ida continues to make its way to our state, please continue to be aware of possible impacts to your area. River flooding, flash flooding, and tornadoes are the biggest threats to Maryland. The greatest risk of flooding is along and North of US-50, especially in Western Maryland, however, the risk exists across the entire state. Rainfall rates could reach 2-3″/hour during the heaviest part of the storm. The greatest threat is the potential for considerable flooding/flash flooding of creeks and urban areas Wed/Wed night. Scattered thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts or a brief tornado. The storm could bring 4-8 inches of rain.

The American Red Cross is urging eligible donors to give blood this September to help tackle the needs of patients relying on lifesaving transfusions. In thanks for supporting patients in need of a transfusion, those who come to give blood or platelets around the Labor Day holiday, Sept. 3-7, will receive a new, 16-ounce Red Cross campfire mug, (while supplies last).
