Here’s a message from the Property Owners’ Association of Deep Creek Lake: The upper mountain trees in the State Park have delayed leaf growth this spring. The following message from DNR explains why:

Park visitors around Deep Creek Lake State Park will notice a lack of leaves near the top of the Meadow Mountain while the remainder of the area has approached full leaf out. Maryland Forest Service and Maryland Department of Agriculture staff visited the area this week and determined this defoliation event is caused by cankerworms. This is a species native to the area. Many times native predators and parasites will reduce the population before they can cause tree mortality. In many instances affected trees manage to refoliate by mid summer. MD Dept. of Agriculture staff do not recommend any treatment at this time and will continue to monitor the area. The park and trails all remain open for park visitor use.
