December 13, 2022: Have you ever heard of the PECS system? I learned yesterday that PECS is the Picture Exchange Communication System: a way for autistic people to communicate without relying on speech. To communicate, people use cards with pictures, symbols, words, or photographs to ask for things, comment on things or answer questions. It was developed as an alternative/augmentative communication system in 1985 by Andy Bondy, PhD, and Lori Frost, MS, CCC-SLP. There is a questionnaire on the website to determine if an individual is a good candidate for PECS.

December 12, 2022: Good Monday morning! Unfortunately, over the weekend, the Garrett County Health Department issued an overdose alert. This was done after learning there has been a recent increase in overdoses related to opiates in and around Garrett County. These overdoses may be related to the synthetic opioid drug fentanyl (roughly 100 times more potent than heroin). If witnessing an overdose, it is important to call 911, and that the individual gets immediate medical care. If a person on the scene has access to naloxone (an opioid antidote) they should administer it immediately. Maryland’s Good Samaritan Law protects a person from arrest for drug and alcohol charges if they call for help for someone else who has overdosed. The weather today will be mostly cloudy. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Forest Conservancy District Boards invite all Maryland fifth graders in private and public schools to participate in the annual Arbor Day Poster Contest. The theme for 2023 is: “Trees Are Terrific…and Cool our Communities!” All entries must be delivered to a local Maryland Forest Service office by noon, January 20, 2023. Garrett County Public Schools sets grade-band and facility-use meetings for northern area schools. The meetings will occur on December 21 at Nothern Garrett High School. Join Grantsville Library today from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM for the Holiday Open House. Experience a magical Harry Potter Christmas through decor, crafts, and activities. Also, join the Oakland Library for an evening of holiday treats, crafts, and activities for both kids and adults. There will be a door prize and a visit from Santa!

December 8, 2022: I am honored to have received a special certificate and recognition yesterday for quarterbacking the County’s Sesquicentennial events. It was over two years of planning and coordinating but we really felt a groundswell of support for the cause. I think it’s safe to say that we all are so very proud of this place we call home!

A few numbers from my quick presentation: On September 17, we had over 2000 attendees, gave away over 500 coin sets, and donated appropriately $10,000 all while celebrating 150 years of connected communities! There are still a few sets of commemorative coins available for sale at the Ruth Enlow Library and the Garrett County Historical Society.

Garrett County Public Schools is looking for members to serve on a committee to look at potential school closings.

Reports find that paying cash to people for losing a specific amount of weight or completing weight-reducing activities works better than offering stand-alone free tools, such as weight-loss programs, diet books, and wearable fitness trackers.

Maryland State Parks will again mark the new year by offering hike opportunities from December 30, 2022, through January 2, 2023. First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks that encourages all 50 states to offer outdoor hiking opportunities to start the new year.

Garrett County New Drivers: Let’s Drive! Scholarships will again be offered to Northern and Southern High School, and Home Schooled students to provide students with a Driver’s Education course.

December 6, 2022: Today is Saint Nicholas Day or also known as the Feast Of Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas was a 4th-century Bishop and one the most notable saints. He became known and adored for his giving nature rewarding the “good” people which is how Santa Claus was inspired. Not much is known about Saint Nicholas but it is believed he died on December 6 which is how the celebration of his life began.

Good Monday morning to you! How was your weekend? I had a great weekend kicking off with A Great Small Town Christmas on Friday Night! Then, we held a Global Fat Tire Bike Day event. This was an event celebrated across the world to talk skills, make friends, and get outside to ride! Fat tire bikes are bikes that have large tires designed for riding in the snow (which we usually get a lot of here in Garrett County)! We had a surprise guest and the Big Man himself rode with us for a bit!

On Saturday, my family went to Nemacolin to enjoy the Christmas displays and an Olympic ice skater performance. The kids (my nieces and nephews: 4, 4, 2, and 6 months) loved the lights!

On a more somber note, tonight’s tree lighting in the town of Oakland will be dedicated to honoring the late Mary Sincell McEwen and her contributions to the town she loved so much. The walking parade will begin at 5:30 PM from the town parking lot and the tree will be lit in front of the B&O Museum at 6 PM as part of the Great Small Town Christmas Celebration.

December 1, 2022: Welcome, December! AKA the beginning of meteorological winter. Meteorological winter is a way for the weather folks to more easily compare weather events year over year. The dates of December 1 to February 28 (or 29) were selected based on the annual temperature cycle and climatological patterns observed on Earth.

Note this is different from the astronomical winter which is based on the position of Earth in relation to the sun. Since people have used observable natural phenomena to mark time for thousands of years, that’s where the December 21 “beginning of winter” date was established. The Earth’s rotation around the sun and its tilt on its axis forms the basis for the astronomical calendar thus “officially” defining seasons with two solstices and two equinoxes. Didn’t know you were in for a science lesson this morning, huh? 🙂

November 30, 2022: As I take a moment to reflect on the last day of November, I feel as though it’s we’ve had a pretty good month overall. Typically, this time of year is known as the off-season (or the mud season to locals) since it can be cold and wet and winter hasn’t officially started. But, that’s not the case for us this year! Wisp Resort is already open for the ski and snowboard season with the tubing park also open! Also, have you heard, there is a new ice skating rink in the town of Grantsville this year? They’re open daily and the reservations are affordable.

GCPS is beginning to investigate the grade band alignment on the Northern end of the county.

The Garrett County Health Department has rescheduled the Parent Rally November 29th at 6:00 PM in the Northern High School cafeteria.
