Maryland Fishing Report as of April 22: Fishing at Deep Creek Lake is heating up as water temperatures reach about 51°F, with anglers finding bluegills, pickerel, and largemouth bass moving into warmer, shallower coves; largemouth bass are beginning to enter shallow spawning areas near structure, while crappie and sunfish are also active, creating great opportunities for bank, wading, and light tackle fishing.

As of April 21, a total of 8,580 trout were stocked statewide this week. In Garrett County, rainbow trout were stocked in the North Branch Potomac River (delayed harvest).

Garrett County has confirmed its first rabies case of 2026 following an April 10 incident in Grantsville involving a raccoon and a newborn goat. The raccoon tested positive, the exposed goat was euthanized, and a person who assisted the animal began post-exposure treatment. Health officials remind residents to avoid contact with wild animals, seek medical care if exposed, and keep pets up to date on rabies vaccinations, with low-cost clinics scheduled for the week of May 11.

Students in Mrs. Jordan Storey’s eighth-grade classes at Southern Garrett High School recently showcased their creativity and understanding of physics with a hands-on roller coaster design event in the media center. After weeks of planning and building, each project brought Newton’s Three Laws of Motion to life while highlighting students’ problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
