The Greater Oakland Business Association is still untangling the legal steps needed to break away from the Town of Oakland, council members learned at the Oct. 5 Mayor and Town Council meeting.
GOBA requested earlier this year to be released from the town’s oversight but no deadline has been set. Once the group finalizes its own organizational structure, the council will need to vote on repealing Chapter 8 of the town code.
That repeal would end the requirement for businesses to belong to GOBA. The association plans to move to flat-rate dues for businesses of any size, collected independently of the town clerk’s office; though businesses would still handle trade licenses and other requirements through the clerk as usual.
