The weather for today will be periods of rain showers all day and most of the evening. A high of 50 and a low of 46 degrees and could get windy.

Tonight is the Spirit Night at Oakland McDonald’s where a portion of sales go to support Garrett County FIRST LEGO League robotics team at the FLL Razorback Invitational at the University of Arkansas in May. From 5:00-8:00pm.

Don’t forget that starting at 9:00am today, CSX will be conducting maintenance at the railroad crossing on Fricks Road, with the expected closure being for three days, dependent on weather and train traffic.

Heard the Reptile Wonders workshops at the Ruth Enlow Library went very well.  I have included a photo they sent us.  That’s looks like a really big garden snake to me…

GOBA’s annual meeting is planned for June 19th at 6:00pm.  They are accepting awards for the Asa McCain Sprit of Oakland award and also for two soon-to-open board positions.

New Germany State Park has announced the schedule for the ninth season of free “Old Time Jams” celebrating Appalachian music on Friday evening over the summer.  They have also scheduled a number of free performances by Greg Latta. Thanks, New Germany!

Just in case you want to get away for a day or two in May during the royal wedding, the Royal Lancaster hotel in London is offering a taste of royal life. The stately package includes an overnight stay in the hotel’s Royal Suite, with panoramic views over Hyde Park and the London skyline.  All for about $5,000/night, not including airfare! I think I’ll be staying at the lake enjoying the mountain air….

Heard the K-12 Arts Fair at the CARC was a huge success Saturday.  I had to be at another event on campus, but the art crowd was significant and came away impressed with all the exhibits and performances. Congratulations to all our talented students! By the way, the CARC pool reopens today after a week of cleaning and maintenance.

Hope you all had a great Earth day yesterday.  Did you know that Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 and that it is now celebrated each year on April 22nd and in 193 countries? This year’s theme was plastic pollution. Here’s a short video by Dr. Jane Goodall, which certainly resonates here in Garrett County as it does globally.

Hey, Have a HART!  HART for Animals is holding four fun fundraisers with guest bartenders at a number of local establishments in May. It was a fun time last year and it should be this time around as well.

Attention boaters: Boating accidents have claimed the lives of four people in Maryland so far this year (NOT at DCL).  Last year, none of the nine boating victims were wearing life jackets. It only takes 60 seconds for an adult to drown and 20 seconds for a child. Yet, in many cases, life jackets are stowed out of reach or are still in their original wrapping.

Here’s an opportunity to help a local entrepreneur and Power of Possibilities (POP) graduate from a few years ago. Chris was a winner in the POP Competition for his Card Caddy product and is now launching a new Dice Tower. His start-up has gone international and this is his latest product, so please consider helping a fellow Garrett Countian succeed.  And, for the record, DCT has no financial interest in his business or sales, just trying to help a local entrepreneur.

There’s an all-you-can-eat spaghetti fundraiser Friday to help First Lego League robotics team 3659 represent Maryland at the Arkansas competition.  The event will be held from 4:00pm – 8:00pm Oak Park Church of the Brethren in Oakland.  This is a great cause!

Visit the Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park 10:00am Saturday to celebrate Earth Day and learn ways that you can help Mother Nature in your everyday life. Program will include hands on activities and is for all ages! They also have a Herp Search (Amphibians and Reptiles) with naturalists at 1:00pm that day.

The Muttminster Dog Show is back and will be held Saturday at the Garrett College Special Events Auditorium, from Noon – 5:00pm. This show is a great way to showcase your dog’s beauty, intelligence and friendliness and also demonstrate the joys of adoption. Proceeds benefit HART for Animals.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources reports that the Walleye season has opened at the lake. They even tell us the best bait and locations and also have some words of caution, along with insight into other fishing opportunities in the state.

It’s Open Mic Night starting at 7:00pm at Our Town Theatre in Oakland this evening. Come out and share your musical, poetic, theatrical or storytelling talent.

If you want to see some impressive local talent check out the 2018 Student Arts Fair this Saturday at the CARC at Garrett College. Student performances and artworks from elementary through high school are scheduled.  A number of activities also available. From 9:00am – 2:00pm.  Refreshments will be available from the SHS Marching Band.

There’s a GOBA meeting this evening starting at 6:00pm at Oakland City Hall. They will be hearing updates from various volunteer teams and discussing details for the upcoming annual dinner in June.  Open to all and I believe they are looking for additional volunteer members for their teams.

The folks at Cindy’s Fund are hosting a cancer support group this evening starting at 6:30pm in the hospital boardroom. It is open to everyone: patients, caregivers, kids, relatives, friends, anyone. They sit and vent and laugh and eat, etc. It’s very informal and comforting. Tonight Dr. Rick Perry will be discussing medical marijuana and use for those with cancer.

The United Way is conducting a community survey and asked Sarah, as a board member, to “spread the word.”  The survey is open to all as the United Way seeks to gain insight into health and human services issues in the region.

A reminder that CSX Transportation has announced that Boiling Springs Road will be closed today at the crossing from 9am to (estimated) Thursday at 5pm. The length of closure will be dependent on track time and/or equipment or weather related issues.

Nice weather this weekend, especially Saturday! The temperature got well into the 80s!  Rain showers changing to snow today; highs near 40 and a low of 26. Little to no accumulation expected. There is a flood warning until 10:30am today.

Took advantage of the wonderful Saturday weather to hike Swallow Falls with my wife.  While most people photograph the larger Muddy Creek Falls, I took this photo looking towards the lower Swallow Falls and wanted to share it with our readers. And, yes, there were people swimming and even wading under the falls!

There’s an information session this evening from 5:30pm – 6:30pm on “Improving Our Worker Pool” at the Oakland Armory.  The session will explain the new high school program being launched this Spring that is designed to develop more “work-ready” graduates.

Our Town Theatre in Oakland is holding auditions for The Dining Room this evening from 7:00pm-9:00pm in the basement of the theatre. This is a play that’s perfect for anyone who has wanted to be in a show but doesn’t want a big part.

Here’s a link to a follow-up letter from the Property Owners Association of Deep Creek Lake on the State Lakes Preservation Fund Bill.  They think it is a good “start” and organization president Bob Hoffman concludes the letter by stating “I am optimistic about the future of our watershed and DCL!”  Thanks Bob and all who worked to get bill this passed.

In honor of Earth Day, volunteer naturalist, Jack Slocomb, will be leading a guided nature walk at New Germany State Park from 3:00pm-4:00pm April 21st.  The hike will begin at the Lake House and will be suited for ages 8 and older.

With “tax day” officially tomorrow, here’s the summary results of an interesting study by SmartAsset on state income taxes in Maryland. Garrett County ranks second lowest.

Here’s something different for those looking to take a drive out of the county in late April. There will be an 18th Century Market Fair at Fort Frederick State Park from April 26th – 29th.  You may want to stop and check it out on the way to the lake that weekend.

The weather today will feel like summer!  sunny and a high of 74 and low of 55. We could see wind gusts of 34 mph. Tomorrow will be more sun, high of 72 and low of 56. Showers will roll in Saturday night and into Sunday. Showers mainly in the afternoon on Sunday with a high temp of 65 and a low of 39 degrees.

The Garrett County Health Fair will be at the Community Aquatic Recreation Center (CARC) in McHenry Saturday from 8:30am – 1:00pm.

Don’t forget to visit the Mountain Fresh Winter Farmers market this Saturday from 11:00am – 1:00pm at the Community Action/Mary Browning Senior Center in Oakland.

The Northern High School JROTC Cash Bash will be held at Garrett College Saturday afternoon from Noon to 4:00pm.  Tickets can be purchased from cadets and parents for $20.  Note: No alcohol and family friendly.

Garrett College will be offering a history course, Railroads of Garrett County: A History, on Thursdays, from April 19th to May 10th, from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. The State of Maryland has recently purchased 2,000 acres of land along the North Branch of the Potomac River near Kitzmiller for, what will be, a new State Park. You may have new neighbors soon!  Now is the time when black bears emerge from their dens. After hibernating for a few months, they are hungry and can be attracted to human food so please take precautions. There is a bear family that we have already seen out on Lakeshore Drive this year.

Always a great event, the 16th annual Taste of Garrett will be held on Sunday, May 6th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at WISP Resort. Patrons can sample a variety of food offerings prepared by their favorite local eateries. All proceeds benefit Garrett Trails, a non-profit engaged in supporting the great trail network in Garrett County. New this year will be craft beers!

According to a recent study, 22% of Americans would switch political parties for a tax-free future. 37% would move to a different country and 24% would get an “IRS” tattoo in exchange for no taxes.

An amended State Lakes Protection and Restoration Fund bill that was termed “a poor compromise” by The Friends of Deep Creek Lake was adopted by the General Assembly Monday in the very last hours of the session.

The Property Owners Association of Deep Creek Lake seemed a little less “disappointed” in their assessment of the State Lakes bill.

Each year, the Maryland Forest Service responds to an average of 210 wildfires that burn about 2,325 acres, with the two peak seasons being Spring and Fall.  Homeowners can help protect their land and homes before a fire breaks out by following tips from the DNR’s Firewise site.

From books to taxes… According to a recent study, nearly one-third of people (30%) say their biggest Tax Day fear is making a math mistake on their taxes, topping not having enough money (29%), identity theft (25%) and getting audited (16%).

Yesterday was “sine die” for the Maryland General Assembly; any legislation that did not pass by midnight last night will not go forward.

Two interesting events coming up at New Germany State Park: Weed or Wildflower will be held on April 16th (and a few other dates) and the Mountain Maryland Native Plant Festival will be held on May 12th.

On Monday, Maryland lawmakers approved legislation that expands the state’s medical marijuana industry in a way that gives minority-owned companies a better shot at opening a new cannabis business.

Roll the dice and take a chance! There may be an opportunity for Garrett County businesses that want to sell to Rocky Gap Casino and Resort.  The Maryland Office of Small, Minority and Women Business is holding an information session on May 2nd where you can learn more about what Rocky Gap needs and also meet their buyers.

Did you know that Americans spend 8.1 billion hours doing taxes each year?  The average person spends 15 hours and $270 completing his or her 1040. No wonder so many of us are grouchy! Seventy percent of taxpayers get a federal tax refund. The average refund in 2018 is $2,925, as of 3/23/2018. More on taxes over the next few days…

Girl Scout Troop #10070 also enjoyed Footworks! In the morning, the group attended workshops to learn about dance steps, rhythm and about Appalachian and Irish heritage in the Garrett County area. Then, the girls were able to attend the Footworks performance that evening with their families. 

Tomorrow at 9:00am is one of two informational sessions to be held to review “Improving our Worker Pool” hosted at the Casselman Inn.

The Allegany Arts Council has a great event schedule this month in support of their Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition. They have designated April as “photography month” and even have a show on works by famed photographer A. Aubrey Bodine.

The Maryland Environmental Trust is offering a one-day volunteer training session for individuals interested in helping to monitor state conservation easements. The training session will be held 6:00pm to 8:00pm on April 17th at the Trust’s HQ in Crownsville.

Are you a small or medium size business owner? Did you know that, according to the National Cyber Alliance, more than 70 percent of cyber attacks target small businesses? Nearly 50 percent of small businesses have been hacked and, of those, as many as 60 percent go out of business after six months. There’s a free in-person/webinar on cyber security on April 25th.  Looks like a strong agenda.

Maryland is the first state in the country to regulate political ads on social media sites. A bill approved by the General Assembly late Thursday would require social media platforms to track all political ads, keep copies of them and record which users are being targeted.

An Explore Garrett College event for prospective students and families will be held Friday evening from 6:00pm – 8:00pm in room 111 of the GIEC building.  This is a great way to find out more about the college and its programs and meet staff and faculty in a relaxed environment.  Placement testing is also available in the afternoon. All are welcome.

Both National Arbor Day (April 27th) and Maryland Arbor Day (first Wednesday) are celebrated in April.  While Nebraska was the first state to declare an Arbor Day in the 1870s, Maryland, with 51% tree cover, is the only state with a Forest Conservation Act.

Feeling stressed?  Well, you aren’t alone, though Maryland is relatively unstressed (less than California!) according to a recent study conducted by Wallet Hub. Check out the report to see where Maryland is on the scale.  Louisiana, New Mexico and West Virginia were the top three stressed states based on the methodology employed.

TEDCO, the Maryland Technology Development Corporation, is reaching out to hear from entrepreneurs who have started or plan to start a for-profit, technology-based, product company located in Maryland, and researchers or scientists who are thinking about commercializing a technology in Maryland. If you are in either of these categories, please take a few minutes to participate in a research project.

Had the pleasure of hearing from a few of the college’s bright, energetic and interesting Adventure Sports Management students yesterday morning. They talked about their experiences in this nationally ranked program and a recent conference presentation on technology and adventure learning. Very impressive!
