Welcome to our newest partner, the Garrett County Habitat for Humanity! GCHFH has touched the lives of 213 families in Garrett County through building 84 homes and significant rehabbing and repairing work. You can get support this work through their annual dinner fundraiser — to be held this year on October 9.

Also, a BIG DCT welcome to Circle R Ranch! Deep Creek Lake Horseback Riding is a fun family activity and Circle R also offers horseback trail rides and horse-drawn sleigh rides (weather permitting).

SAVE THE DATE: The 47th Annual Antique/Vintage & Maker Market will be ON this year October 15 -17, 2021 at the Oakland Community center (former armory) as a fundraising event for Civic Club of Oakland – serving and giving back to the community for over 100 years. Antiques, vintage items, collectibles, and handcrafted items. The Oakland Civic Club Café offers soup and homemade baked goods. $3 admission is good for all 3 days.

My husband and I were able to enjoy the farmer x baker collaboration at the new Hideaway Co. over the weekend. A guest chef came in to prepare a wonderful meal for the glampers on site but we went just for the dinner. It was great!

Remember the 64th Annual Garrett County Agricultural Fair is this week! The Exhibit Barns Open at 10am today.

A few items to note: The 4-H and FFA Livestock Skill-A-Thon is at 12pm, the Amusements Open at 1pm, the Custom Car Show is at 4pm, 4-H and FFA Sheep Showmanship is at 4pm, Horsemanship Contest is at 5pm and the 4-H Fashion Review is at 6pm.

At 7:30pm, tonight, it’s BEATLEMANIA MAGIC- Musical Entertainment. And, at 8:30pm the famous Cow Patty Bingo!

It’s Senior Citizen’s and Veteran’s Day tomorrow at the FAIR! FREE admission with proof of age – 60 & up – or Veteran ID until 5 pm. Seniors and Veterans ride free until 5:00 pm. Exhibit Barns open 10 am-10 pm.

At the Kitzmiller Library from 3pm – 4pm, it’s the What We’re Reading Book Group.

NOTE: Carson Peters will not be able to make his scheduled appearance. His band, however, Iron Mountain will still be performing some great bluegrass music and old-time favorites on Saturday night.

The Town of Oakland is continuing paving of Pennington Street, Bartlett Street, 1st Street (between Pennington Street and Liberty Street), and Dixon Street. Dates are subject to change due to inclement weather. Motorists are advised to avoid these areas if possible and to avoid parking on the street. Oakland’s Business Coordinator Nicole Raynovich is celebrating 5th generations! Edith Riley, 100, had the opportunity to meet her great-great-granddaughter and namesake, Riley McCullough, 9 months, last week. Baby Riley was born on 10/01/2020; just a week after Edith celebrated her 100th birthday.

Sang Run Road Bridge will be closed beginning Monday, August 16, 2021. This road and bridge closure will continue for approximately six weeks until the bridge project completion. The planned closure is located approximately 1 mile from Bishoff Road intersection. The suggested alternate route for traffic includes Hoyes Sang Run Road and Oakland Sang Run Road. Any questions can be directed to the Accident County Roads Garage at 301-746-8156.

Rules and Regulations 1. MAXIMUM 10 PHOTOS PER EXHIBITOR 2. Photography entries must be permanently surface mounted (ex: dry mounted, doublesided tape, or glued) to white or colored poster board, outside mount measurement must be 11” x 14” only. 3. The minimum size of all prints is 5” x 7”; the maximum size is 8” x 12”. 4. Only one entry is allowed in each class. 5. Entries must be taken within the past year. 6. There will be no separation between prints made from film and digital photography in any class. 7. The name and address of the exhibitor should be placed on the back of the poster board. 8. The Maryland DNR has posted its fishing report for this week. “Freshwater biologists have been conducting the annual seining survey for smallmouth bass juvenile recruitment. Preliminary observations suggested an excellent hatch; however, the survey thus far has indicated below-average numbers. There appear to be some fish health issues that are impacting juvenile smallmouth in particular — staff is currently collecting samples of these fish to identify the cause. A detailed summary will be available following the conclusion of this survey. ”

The Garrett County Health Department has updated the public on the newest CDC recommendations for mask-wearing.

Garrett County is one of only four Maryland counties that saw a decrease in opioid deaths between 2019 and 2020. The decrease was from 6 to 5 deaths. “Even one overdose death is too many for our community,” said Garrett County Health Officer Bob Stephens. “However, we are pleased that the hard work of all of our local partners to reduce stigma, provide treatment options and prevent overdose deaths is paying off.” See more numbers related to opioid overdoses here.

Speaking of United Way, come see me at the Garrett County Fair on Saturday, August 7 where I will be working the famous Rotary Fry Booth! Volunteering for the fry booth will help United Way of Garrett County raise funds that will stay in Garrett County and directly help our community.

Here’s a short history on County United Way and information about a new partnership with United Way of Garrett County, the Garrett County Community Action Committee, and Christian Crossings.

The next public meeting for the Garrett County Commissioners will be on Monday, August 2, 2021.

Tuesday July 27

The Deep Creek Watershed Foundation is sponsoring a virtual Brunch and Learn talk today 10 am. Mr. Eric Null, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Manager of the Deep Creek Lake Natural Resource Management Area, will be discussing shoreline erosion control strategies and best management practices for the buffer strip.

The Town of Oakland has a BIG TREE honor.

The Little Yough Summer Music Festival continues this Friday, July 30th featuring The Moon My Twin. Deep, heavy and electrifying, The Moon My Twin is a modern rock band with roots in grunge, psychedelia and indie.

Did you know Deep Creek Lake was created by capturing the water of an existing Deep Creek? Deep Creek Hydro is a two-unit, 20 MW hydroelectric generation station that was built in 1925. Aside from generating electricity, Deep Creek Hydro also allows for lake level management, fisheries support, and white water recreation.

Wednesday July 21

I saw this interesting find today: A listing for 5 vintage placemats from The Chimney Corner in Red House, Maryland. Does anyone remember this location?

Garrett County Public Schools does not intend to provide a virtual option this fall. GCPS will provide full in-person instruction five days a week with normal school operating hours and full access to campuses and facilities.

The school system is also now enrolling new students who are returning from parent home instruction or those who are attending this year from another school system. GCPS is also enrolling students entering pre-kindergarten and kindergarten for the first time. A new enrollment interest form is available for easy access.

Dot Sisler shared this bright, red sunset photo with us! We are seeing a haze and a change in the color of the sun due to the continued wildfires out West. “Due to the fact that smoke particles are small and light, they can be transported hundreds if not a few thousand miles away from their source,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Alex DaSilva explained.

CSX Transportation has announced road closure in August at Swanton Hill for track repairs.

Did you see the red sun last evening. According to Idaho News 2, this prolonged smoky haze from wildfires smoke filters out shorter wavelengths of light, leaving mostly red and orange wavelengths to shine through and be seen by the naked human eye.

The Art & Wine Festival is the largest fundraiser of the year for HART for Animals and the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) and many volunteers will be needed. Volunteer tasks will be set-up, wine pouring, security, silent auction, tear-down, and staffing the front gate, wine store, and information areas. Volunteers will receive free non-tasting admission and a festival t-shirt, or have the option to purchase a tasting ticket at a discounted price.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is seeking comments on proposed fishing regulations and penalty systems. Comments provide the department with additional information and perspectives.

The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area’s Mini-Grant Program is now accepting applications. The mini-grant program is a one-to-one cash or in-kind matching grant for up to $3,000.00 designed to provide funding for non-capital projects including innovative exhibits, tours, events, planning and projects which build upon interpretive themes identified in the Heritage Area’s Management Plan.

The third of four Deep Creek Lake hydrilla herbicide treatments is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Tuesday, July 20. A map showing the treatment locations as red polygons can be seen below:

I stopped by Ryan’s Disc Golf Stop on Tuesday and owner Ryan Harlow shared some techniques and history with me. Disc golf is a great, relaxing game/sport for those of us who just like to be outside. Wednesday July 14

The Deep Creek Lake Lion’s Club is holding its annual blind camper week. During the summer, the club sets up tents for the students at Deep Creek Lake State Park, where they spend the days tubing on the lake and the nights roasting marshmallows by the fire. Local attractions also donate their facilities to allow the students to experience the fun of the mountain coaster, bumper cars, and go-carts.
