Garrett County has confirmed its first rabies case of 2026 following an April 10 incident in Grantsville involving a raccoon and a newborn goat. The raccoon tested positive, the exposed goat was euthanized, and a person who assisted the animal began post-exposure treatment. Health officials remind residents to avoid contact with wild animals, seek medical care if exposed, and keep pets up to date on rabies vaccinations, with low-cost clinics scheduled for the week of May 11.

The Friends of Maryland State Forests and Parks have teamed up with sixteen other states to host the Run for the Trees virtual 5K, supporting tree planting and forest protection efforts. Participants can complete a 5K anytime from April 18–26, 2026, in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day, with registered runners receiving a Happy Little T-shirt, sticker, commemorative bib, and finisher’s medal.
