Garrett County Public Schools is aware of nationwide threats to other schools but (at the time of posting) had not received any threats themselves. The district is working with local law enforcement and the Maryland Center for School Safety, so you will see increased police presence around schools.

Monday, September 2, 2024: The Labor Day holiday celebrates the workforce of the United States and is always the first Monday of every September.

A Reminder of Students’ First Day of School and Bus Safety: Garrett County Public Schools will start the new school year on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, with a 3-hour early dismissal. All schools will be closed on Monday, September 2, for Labor Day.

USDA Rural Development Under Secretary Dr. Basil Gooden announced that USDA is now accepting applications for loans and grants aimed at helping rural small business owners and entrepreneurs access new and improved markets.

Maryland’s is celebrating 25 years of the Rural Legacy Program — preserving over 125,000 acres of valuable land, farms, and forests, with a $405 million public investment.

The Garrett County Health Department confirmed the county’s sixth rabies case for 2024, with a rabid raccoon reported on August 26 and confirmed positive on August 28. This marks the fourth rabid animal in the county within the past 30 days.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will open archery season for white-tailed and sika deer on September 6, running intermittently until January 31, 2025.

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has announced updated Income Eligibility Guidelines (IEGs) for free and reduced-price school meals. These guidelines, revised annually by the federal government, will be in effect through June 30, 2025.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has finished the final hydrilla treatment at Deep Creek Lake for 2024. The initial treatment at Meadow Mountain Cove was completed on August 21 and will be included in the 2025 treatment schedule.

The Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) results for the 2023-2024 school year highlighting ongoing progress in reversing post-pandemic learning loss. Proficiency in ELA rose to 48.4% from 47.9%, and math proficiency increased to 24.1% from 23.3%.

The Garrett County Sheriff’s Department is hiring full-time Sheriff’s Deputies. Apply by September 16, 2024, for a role with a competitive salary and benefits package.

Here’s the MD Fishing Report as of July 10: Largemouth bass are popular among freshwater anglers, feeding at night and resting in cool shade during hot summer days.

Starting July 1, 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor will raise the overtime pay threshold to $844 per week ($43,888 annually) and further increase it to $1,128 per week ($58,656 annually) by January 1, 2025. This update aims to better protect workers against inflation. In Maryland, 303,259 additional workers will now qualify for overtime pay.

The USDA announced $4.5 million to establish three new Nutrition Hubs nationwide. These hubs will promote food and nutrition security and help prevent diet-related chronic diseases, focusing on historically underserved communities.
