A new program in Maryland will help connect residents with mental health services beginning on July 1. Under the new law, the state Department of Health is establishing a mental health services phone call program to be run by Two-One-One Maryland. Officials will periodically check in on those who take part in the program and offer to connect them with mental health services as needed.
The Race Across America bike race is underway. For 38 years, Race Across America (RAAM) has been challenging ultracyclists from around the globe to push their physical and mental limits to the farthest reaches. Starting in Oceanside, CA, RAAM spans over 3000 miles, climbs 175,000 feet, crosses 12 states, and finishes at City Dock in Annapolis, Maryland.
According to the attached schedule, the riders will begin to come through McHenry (along 219) on June 24.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Its name stems from June 19, 1865, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas, issued General Order No. 3, which announced that in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation, “all slaves are free.”

Effective October 1, 2008, the Smith Island Cake became the State Dessert of Maryland (Chapters 164 & 165, Acts of 2008; Code General Provisions Article, sec. 7-313). Maryland Governor Hogan announced yesterday that Maryland will lift COVID state of emergency on July 1 and end the statewide mask order. There will also be a 45-dau administrative grace period for state services.
On Tuesday, June 15th, Troopers from the McHenry Barrack received a call for a destruction of property at 2281 Lower New Germany Road. It was learned that an unknown vehicle drove through the owner’s farm field, causing substantial damage to his crops and property. TFC N. Zais is investigating the destruction and is requesting anyone with information contact him at 301-387-1101, or nathan.zais@maryland.gov. Callers may remain anonymous.

Garrett County Public Utilities continues hydrant flow testing to update the hydrant locations and flow rates for their 911 dispatch and Fire Company’s database. The areas that could be impacted will include water customers in Mt. Lake Park, Deer Park, Loch Lynn, Bloomington, Kitzmiller, Shallmar, Gorman, McHenry, Thayerville, Friendsville, and Keyser’s Ridge. Customers that experience dirty or cloudy water are advised to flush the cold-water supply for 15 minutes or until the water becomes clear.
Also, there was a water main break at 1163 Deep Creek Drive last evening. Service is restored but will be intermittent this morning due to repairs. Upon service restoration customers that experience cloudy or dirty water are advised to run the cold water supply for 15 minutes or until clear.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s is ending federal unemployment programs — the extra $300/week payments — two months early. His administration said Hogan looked at factors including increasing vaccination rates, job growth, and stories from business owners who say they can’t find people to hire.
Maryland seems to be in the middle of the pack: experiencing the 20th smallest rise in unemployment since COVID.

Maryland State Highway historic road marker is today, Tuesday, June 8 at 12-noon. The reception will be held at 2008 Maryland Highway (Rte. 135) to mark the Garrett County Roads Workers Strike of 1970. On hand for the installation was Tom Holler, a retired Garrett County Roads Department worker and son of strike participant Lyden Holler.

I heard from my sister-in-law last night that local daycare centers have very strict COVID-19 protocols. We’re not out of the woods yet. Current COVID-19 numbers for Garrett County are: 2,036 Confirmed Positive Test Results (Garrett County Residents) and 64 COVID-19 Related Deaths (Garrett County Residents).
Eligible small businesses, nonprofits, sole proprietors, and independent contractors can still apply for a COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan. The loan provides economic relief to small businesses and nonprofit organizations that are currently experiencing a temporary loss of revenue. SBA is still accepting applications.

I have not seen ANY cicadas here at the lake. Here’s a reminder from the Maryland Department of the Environment: After 17 years below ground these cicadas were not able to finish emerging and mate because of the piece of glass. Don’t litter!
