Broadford Recreational Park is a family-oriented park owned by the Town of Oakland. The park offers a lake, picnic and beach areas, volleyball, basketball, boat launch, boat, and pavilion rentals. Daily admission to Broadford Park is $4 per car Monday-Friday. It is $5 per car on Saturday & Sunday. Boat rentals are $5.00 per/hr. Or $15.00 per/day including John Boats, Canoes, Kayaks, and Paddle Boats. Broadford Senior and Family Passes are also available.

In partnership with the Maryland Department of Health and Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, the Baltimore City Health Department is conducting this statewide survey to learn about what quality reproductive health care look like for folks who are connected to the state’s network of clinics and/or have never visited our clinics but may be interested in making an appointment. Must be a Maryland resident between the ages of 18 to 45 years old. Anyone who completed the survey can enter a raffle at the end of the survey to win a $50 Amazon gift card.

The scheduled herbicide treatment at Deep Creek Lake will be performed today, August 19. For full details regarding these efforts, please visit the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website. During the treatment process, boaters and other waterway users are asked to stay clear of the treatment boat so that the proper dosage of herbicide can be administered. Once applied, there are no recreational restrictions associated with the herbicide. Additionally, dive teams will be on the lake periodically throughout the summer, with divers in the water monitoring the hydrilla emergence and response to the herbicide. If you see red and white dive flags, please stay at least 100 feet away as divers are in the water.

Garrett County Public Schools shared its summer programming recap. A few of the goals of the programming were to 1. To remediate identified priority standards from grade-level content 2. To accelerate and scaffold upcoming content by ensuring mastery of pre-requisite skills focused on priority standards 3. Provide social-emotional support to students.

Friendsville Days is this weekend! The festival will kick off tonight with a community dinner followed by live music from 6pm- 9pm by a local favorite, Buffalo Run. On Saturday, August 14th at noon, the parade through the town of Friendsville, led by our grand Marshall Friendsville’s very own Ina Hicks. After the parade on Saturday, the activities at the park will commence at 1pm.
Celebrate the Garrett County Historical Society’s 80th Anniversary with a good old-fashioned Ice Cream Social outside the museum at Dailey Park on 2nd St. There will be homemade cupcakes, Devler’s ice cream, and more.

The Perseid meteor shower will peak from midnight on August 11 to dawn on August 13 but actually runs from July 23 to August 22, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. This is one of the biggest showers of the year.

The Comptroller’s Office is offering a $1,000 scholarship and a $500 scholarship as contest prizes. To enter, students must email a creative photo or video (less than 60 seconds) promoting tax-free week, showcasing their purchases and their support of Maryland retailers to SHOPMDTAXFREE@marylandtaxes.gov. Entries also should be posted on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or TikTok using the hashtag #shopmdtaxfree. For best consideration, submissions should display and tag the name of the retailer and explain why it’s their favorite place to shop tax free.

No local word on mask mandates but the city of Baltimore is implementing masks in all indoor spaces regardless of vaccination status as of 9am today.
