The weather today will be partly sunny in the morning then it will be mostly cloudy, with scattered snow showers in the afternoon. Little or no additional snow accumulation—highs around 30 and a low of 21. Southwest winds of 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 40%.

Would you be crazy enough to ride your bike when the temperature is only 7 degrees?! A group of bikers did just that over the weekend… the top distance rider — and my new friend Shawn — did 15 miles through the woods at the Deep Creek Lions Club Park.

Join George’s Creek Regional Library today at 4:00 PM for a presentation with local historian Bucky Schriver about the B-52 Memory Collecting Event: Buzz One Four Bomber Crash in 1964. This will also be an opportunity to share your experience, hear others’, and have your memories collected for a bound book housed at the library’s History Room.

Children are invited to join the Lego Club of Oakland and Grantsville Library today at 7:00 PM. This is designed for children ages four and up and features free building time with lots of building bricks.

Thursday January 20

The White House is to make 400 million N95 masks available for free. Do you know the difference between the N95 and the KN95 respirators? The N95 is approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, or NIOSH, which regulates masks in the United States while the KN95 is made to meet Chinese standards, and isn’t NIOSH-approved.

Deep Creek Lake has been named a top location to look for a winter vacation home by Vacasa. Coming in at number 4, DCL market has a cap rate of 6.2% and a median home price of $439,367. “Given the pandemic, a second home offers a sense of security and personal space that a hotel or vacation rental may not,” said Joe Robison, data reporter at online moving resource MoveBuddha.com. “And with work-from-home protocols, the freedom to move between two different home offices could be tremendously attractive as it offers a change of scenery without the unknown variables of booking a vacation rental.”

By my count, the total snow accumulation here in Oakland was 14.75 since Sunday evening. The total for this season is still pretty low.

Tuesday January 18

Due to the weather, there will be no meals distributed on Tuesday, January 18th. All meals will be distributed on Thursday, January 20th at the same times. Meals will return to Tuesday and Thursday delivery on Tuesday, January 24, 2022. All meals are available to any child 18 and under – free of charge – regardless of whether they are enrolled in Garrett County Public Schools or not.

To further broaden understanding of equity in communities across the country, the U.S. Census Bureau’s Community Resilience Estimates (CRE) program just released a new data product: CRE for Equity. The tool includes a new dashboard and data that helps users understand their communities’ social vulnerability and equity.

By my snow stick, we have received 8.25″ of snow so far in the last 24 hours.

Betty White spent her whole life helping animal rescue organizations and fans are asking that people honor Betty White, on what would have been her 100th birthday, by donating $5.00 or more to animal shelters. Local rescue organization, HART for Animals will be participating in the #BettyWhiteChallenge today. You can honor Betty White by donating to HART for Animals or by holding a fundraiser yourself in her name.

Join Ranger Noah on this 2-mile hike on the Turnpike Trail and Hemlock Loop, and learn about New Germany’s native trees, such as the eastern hemlock and eastern white pine, and their importance in the ecosystem.

A COVID Positive At-Home Test Report Portal is now available for Maryland residents to alert the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) of a positive result from a COVID-19 at-home test. Patients can use the instructions provided with each test kit or patients can visit https://covidlink.maryland.gov/selfreport to report positive results directly to MDH.

In accordance with the school calendar, today, January 14, 2022 is a three hour early dismissal for Garrett County Public School students. The staff will be participating in staff development activities in the afternoon.

A recent study found that in Maryland, 8.3% of adults aged 25 and older live with their parents, compared to 7.3% of adults at the national level.

The weather today will be partly sunny with a slight chance of freezing rain in the morning. It will then be cloudy with a chance of rain showers and a slight chance of snow showers in the afternoon—highs in the lower 40s and a low of 28. Southwest winds of 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation 40%.

The outlook for the weekend is a snow event… (remember from yesterday that any snowfall totals are a guess at this point)

“Enough cold air is likely to be in place for an all or mostly snow event from near and west of Interstate 81 corridor in the Northeast states, while near and south and east of I-95, rain is likely to be the primary form of precipitation,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bill Deger said, adding that in between snow, ice and rain may fall.

Wednesday January 12

The weather today will be mostly sunny—highs in the upper 30s and a low of 28—west winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

There are some “rumblings” about snowfall expected this weekend but we’re reminded by meteorologist Justin Berk that long-range forecasts are generally not reliable.

The Garrett County Health Department received notification of a grim milestone as the county recorded its 100th death attributed to COVID-19 or its related complications. Since December 1st there has been a total of 15 Garrett County residents who have died as a result of COVID infection.

From the Pittsburgh NWs: Lake-enhanced snow showers will continue today as crossing troughs accrue moisture from the Great Lakes. As of yesterday and in lieu of the ongoing La Nina-influenced winter, 7.1% of the Great Lakes are ice-covered. Garrett County Board of Education will receive Requests for Proposal (RFP) from experienced vendors to install new visitor bleachers at the stadium complexes at Northern and Southern Garrett High Schools. The deadline for receipt is Monday, January 24, 2022 at 1:00 pm (EST).

A WINTER STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 10 AM EST FRIDAY. Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches. Northwest winds will increase and gust around 30 to 35 mph Friday morning. Wind chills around zero to -10 degrees are possible along the ridge tops Friday morning. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute and the Friday morning commute.

Wisp Resort reopens for skiing and snowboarding today from 9:00am to 9:00pm. By maximizing every opportunity to deliver a quality snow surface, skiers and riders can expect three trails including Muskrat, Boulder Run, and Sunset Blvd served by Chair 1 and the Sunset Carpet learning area. Snow Tubing at the Mountain Park and the mountain coaster are also open.
