Jim Taylor from Towson won the 50th Annual Migratory Game Bird Stamp Design Contest, the very last art contest for the physical stamp from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

The Maryland DNR reports a 16% decrease in the early 2023 archery and muzzleloader season deer harvest compared to last year, with only 16,607 deer harvested, down from 20,267.

During Maryland’s 20th annual black bear hunt from October 23-28 in Allegany, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington counties, hunters successfully harvested 103 black bears. This included 40 males and 63 females. Additionally, farmers with agricultural damage permits took down nine more bears (four males and five females) between September 1 and October 31.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources invites experienced deer hunters to mentor young individuals during the upcoming Junior Deer Hunting Days. It’s open statewide on November 11 and, on November 12, extends to additional counties for private land and designated public land.

Got your 2023-2024 Maryland Hunting License? Hunting season is here! Deer firearms season is approaching, archery season is on, and waterfowl and small game hunting are picking up with cooler weather.

Garrett County Public Schools and many others are dealing with a national milk carton shortage. About 60% of the current orders are expected to be fulfilled but they’re relying on a secondary milk supplier for 8oz cartons until the issue is resolved. If the shortage persists, GCPS may explore alternatives like juice or water for students.

According to Outdoor Life, the opening day of Maryland’s short black bear season, hunters harvested a total of 24 bears. The biggest was a 643-pound boar that set a new record for the heaviest bruin ever killed in the state. It was checked in by a hunter named Melissa, who preferred not to share her last name or the details behind the hunt. “Melissa didn’t want publicity, but she’s from Garrett County, and she shot it about 8 a.m.,” Maryland DNR game mammal leader Jonathan Trudeau tells Outdoor Life. “I checked in the bear. She told me she shot it once with a .350 Legend rifle and it didn’t go far before falling.”

After that, rejoin Ranger Noah for the Living Off the Land Hike, a captivating tribute to Native American Heritage Month, as you unravel their land-use traditions. And make sure not to miss the Hibernation Hike, a 2-mile journey led by Ranger Noah, where you’ll explore the local small mammals and their strategies for surviving the challenging Garrett County winter.

The Eastern Orthodox Mission of Cumberland convenes a monthly Divine Liturgy service every first Saturday of the month at the chapel within Emmanuel Episcopal Church, situated on Washington Street in Cumberland.

Thursday, November 2, 2023: The weather will be mostly cloudy, with scattered snow showers. Little or no snow accumulation, with highs in the lower 30s and a low of 23. Northwest winds of around 10 to 15 mph, with Gusts up to 25 mph. The chance of snow is 40%.

A local resident has taken on the Operation Christmas Surprise: Garrett Co. initiative and is looking for sponsors and donations. I can’t speak to the entirety of the program but my husband and I were able to help a family last year. I met up directly with the family and they were so very appreciative!

The State of Maryland is inviting public comments regarding an additional proposed silvicultural activity for the FY24 Potomac-Garrett State Forest Annual Work Plan — Visit the proposal link at https://dnr.maryland.gov/forests/pages/workplans.aspx and share your comments at stateforests.dnr@maryland.gov.
