Public Notice: Garrett County is proposing a permanent two-lane replacement for the Swallow Falls Road bridge to restore the natural river flow and improve recreational access. The new design features a scenic arch and a wider span, allowing for the removal of old piers and foundations. By building the new bridge adjacent to the current one, the county will maintain traffic flow and avoid lengthy detours during construction.

The Garrett County Health Department has confirmed the third case of pertussis in 2026, totaling six cases reported in the last six months. Health officials urge residents to review their vaccination records and monitor for cold-like symptoms that progress into severe coughing fits.

Deep Creek Lake made an appearance all the way down in Florida recently! During a visit to The Casey Key Tiki Bar, Laurie and Danny Dohnalek and friends added a custom sign to the establishment’s growing collection of “happy place” markers from around the country. Their sign proudly points toward Deep Creek Lake — 1,064 miles away — complete with two black bears for a little Mountain Maryland flair. The tiki bar has a tradition where visitors post signs showing the distance to their favorite place, and now Deep Creek Lake has officially joined the wall.

As of May 11, a total of 3,320 trout were stocked statewide this week. In Garrett County, rainbow trout were stocked in Bear Creek.

The historic Oakland Post Office is home to “Buckwheat Harvest,” a New Deal-era mural painted by artist Robert Gates in the 1940s. Recently restored, the mural continues to celebrate Garrett County’s agricultural history and can be viewed in the post office lobby 24/7.

The weather today will be mostly sunny, with highs in the upper 50s. Northwest winds of around 5 to 10 mph.

As of May 6, a total of 3,460 trout were stocked statewide this week. In Garrett County, the North Branch Potomac River (Gorman) received golden and rainbow trout, the North Branch Potomac River (Kitzmiller) received golden and rainbow trout, and the Youghiogheny River in Oakland received golden and rainbow trout.

The Maryland Fishing Report as of May 6 says anglers are enjoying great spring fishing across the state! Trout stockings continue in central and western Maryland, while smallmouth bass and walleye are active in the upper Potomac River and Deep Creek Lake. Largemouth bass are wrapping up spawning season, and May is also a great time to catch sunfish statewide.

The Garrett County Commissioners have approved lowering the local Real Property Tax rate from $1.02 to $1.00 per $100 of assessed value for the upcoming fiscal year, providing relief for residents and businesses while continuing to support essential county services.

The Garrett County Bar Association honored local high school students at a banquet celebrating their work in the Maryland MyLaw Mock Trial Competition, where both teams showed strong performances. Southern retained the county trophy, and the event highlighted students’ growth in critical thinking, teamwork, and public speaking.

The TCCWMD is seeking input for the Western Maryland Entrepreneurial Landscape Survey to better support local businesses and organizations. Conducted in partnership with the Bridging Innovation Institute, this confidential survey takes about 15–20 minutes to complete and will help shape future strategies for the region.
