Garrett College highlights its 17 current international students
Garrett College’s November 16th Joan Crawford Lecture Series will feature the College’s 17 international students, who represent 12 different countries. The 6 p.m. event will take place in the Morin Family Gymnasium of the Edwards Community Aquatic & Recreation Complex.
The event is free and open to the public. Those in attendance will have an opportunity to sample popular cuisine from each student’s home country, including a Dominican rice pudding, Canadian poutine, and Japanese ramen. Students will also share interesting facts about their countries as well as popular activities and music.
Countries represented include Spain, Scotland, United Kingdom, Isle of Mann, France, Philippines, Canada, Dominican Republic, Germany, Serbia, Cameroon, and Japan.
“Our international students help the College create a richer, more culturally diverse environment,” said Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College’s president. “Garrett College has a long history of seeking out and nurturing international students, with strong support from our local community. This event is just one strategy we use to bring together our students and our community.”
Garrett College’s offices of admissions, institutional compliance, and human resources are all event co-sponsors. This is the fourth consecutive academic year the College has sponsored the event.
“An Evening Abroad showcases the diverse experiences of the College’s international students,” said Shelley Menear, GC’s director of institutional compliance. “It’s a celebration of the cuisine, customs, and experiences of our international students, and encourages cultural exchange, broadens understanding, and enriches the campus community.”
Menear invited local restaurants that wish to get involved to become an event sponsor. Sponsoring restaurants assist students in preparing dishes that represent the students’ home countries.
“This would help us support our students , reduce costs, and showcase the culinary talents of our community establishments,” said Menear, noting interested establishments may reach her at shelley.menear@garrettcollege.edu.
The Joan Crawford Lecture Series honors dynamic educator Joan R. Crawford, who died in 2010 after serving the Garrett College community for 30 years in a variety of faculty and staff roles. JCLS presentations are offered free of charge, and the public and community members are invited to attend.
