The Deep Creek Adventure Bureau organized its third annual winter fat tire bike event series, part of the first annual Highlands Fat Tire Series. Held at Herrington Manor State Park and Garrett State Forest on February 24, 2023, competitors tackled a mix of trails in heavy snowfall. Susan Haywood, Zachary Adams, and Sean Smith emerged victorious in their divisions.

15 Garrett County Government employees participated in the inaugural Community Dunk event, raising $7,827 for Special Olympics Maryland. The event drew new participants countywide, showing solidarity as they plunged into Deep Creek Lake to support friends, family, and colleagues for a noble cause.

Last year, wildfires in Maryland surpassed the 10-year average in both frequency and acreage burned, as reported by the Maryland Forest Service’s Annual Wildland Fire Report, released this month.

The Garrett County Steps to Better Health Committee announced the 2024 Family Fun Festival and Health Fair on April 6, 2024, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Community Aquatic & Recreation Complex (CARC) at Garrett College in McHenry.

At the February Board meeting, Mr. Paul Edwards, Director of Secondary Education, requested and received approval to set the last day for the Senior Class of 2024 on May 29, 2024. Graduation is scheduled for June 1, 2024, at the Garrett County Fairgrounds.

Legislation by Senator Mike McKay (SB837) and Delegate Jim Hinebaugh (HB910) aims to control nearshore grass growth in Deep Creek Lake. Hearings for these bills will be held in Annapolis on February 20 and 23. They require Brookfield Power to lower the lake for 30 days in winter to prevent grass growth.
