Weekend of October 6, 2023:

The weather today will be cloudy. A chance of showers in the morning, then showers likely, with a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon—highs in the mid-60s and a low of 44. South winds of around 5 to 10 mph. The chance of rain is 70%. Saturday will be mostly sunny, with a 50% chance of showers—highs in the lower 50s and a low of 37. West winds of around 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Sunday will be cloudy, with highs in the mid-40s and a low of 37. The chance of rain is 40%.

Fall has arrived with sunny skies, fluffy clouds, and plenty of sunshine, but cooler temperatures have been missing. However, as nights dip into the low 50s and 60s, the conditions for colorful leaf changes are finally here in Maryland – check out the official Fall Foliage Report for more details. Also, as of October 5th, Maryland Department of Natural Resources crews have stocked 1,200 trout.

While it’s disheartening to bid farewell, please take note that two longstanding establishments in town will be closing their doors. Deep Creek Fitness, your fitness companion for the past 11 years, will conclude its operations on October 31, 2023. Additionally, Four Storm Artists Gallery, which has enriched the community for 15 years, will also be closing its doors. Tuesday, October 3, 2023: John Frank, Garrett County’s previous Director of Emergency Management, has officially retired. He leaves big shoes to fill and a huge commitment to Garrett County public safety.

The Maryland State Department of Education has just updated the Income Eligibility Guidelines for school meals, effective from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024.

Angie Maule, Regional Senior Director of Performance Improvement and Quality at Garrett Regional Medical Center and Potomac Valley Hospital, has been newly appointed to the Performance Measurement Workgroup of the Health Services Cost Review Commission.

The Deep Creek Lake Lions Club is seeking public donations of. boats, personal watercrafts, accessories, and/or snowmobiles for their June 8, 2024 auction. Donate to support the community and potentially save on storage fees.

Garrett County Health Department’s Environmental Health Services confirms the county’s second rabies case in 2023. A dog, whose rabies vaccination had lapsed, had a fight with a raccoon near Dry Run Road on September 26, 2023. The raccoon was euthanized and tested positive for rabies. The dog was re-vaccinated immediately and will be monitored for 45 days under the owner’s supervision.

State Superintendent Mr. Choudhury will resign on October 6, 2023. He will become a Senior Advisor to the State Board on policy and strategy from October 7, 2023, to June 30, 2024, in a mutual agreement.

Deep Creek Weekend of September 29, 2023: Welcome October! This week has really gotten me in the autumn mood. The air has been a little bit more crisp, it’s been lightly raining… I really don’t look forward to the fall but when it squarely arrives, I appreciate it!

The weather today will be a patchy drizzle in the morning. Patchy fog in the morning. Partly sunny, with isolated showers—highs in the upper 60s and a low of 53. In early October, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will initiate its fall trout stocking program where thousands of brown, golden, and rainbow trout, raised in state hatcheries, will be transported and released across the state. And… If you haven’t done so already, please help the Maryland Department of Natural Resources learn more about stocked trout angler preferences and motivations. Please complete a brief survey by today, September 29, to help enhance the stocked trout program and your fishing satisfaction.

Garrett County Public Schools celebrates outstanding MCAP results, with several schools ranking among Maryland’s top improvers in both English Language Arts and Mathematics. Notably, Broad Ford Elementary leads the state in Math proficiency, and Northern Garrett High School ranks fourth in ELA proficiency improvement. Crellin Elementary and Northern Garrett Middle School also excel, making them top performers in the state.
