The new MD Outdoors app is replacing AccessDNR as Maryland’s official tool for outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, and anglers. Users should delete the old app and download the free updated version from the DNR website, now featuring a streamlined interface, auto-renewal options, and more.

Maryland reports the 6th lowest rate of foodborne illness in the U.S., with 40.6 cases per 100,000 residents annually, according to a new Trace One analysis using CDC data from 2019–2022. While summer brings higher foodborne illness risk nationwide—especially from bacteria thriving in warm weather—Maryland stands out for its lower overall rates. However, the state sees a higher-than-average rate of Vibrio infections, often linked to raw or undercooked shellfish like oysters.

With conventional birth costs averaging over $2,600 with insurance and nearly $15,000 without, WalletHub has released its 2025 report on the Best & Worst States to Have a Baby. The study compares all 50 states and D.C. across 31 factors, including cost, health care access, and baby-friendliness. West Virginia ranks low on the list at #42.

Maryland Fishing Report as of July 30: Cooler waters in western Maryland streams and reservoirs are offering relief from the summer heat. Deep Creek Lake fishing remains strong, though some trout anglers are pausing catch-and-release due to warm, low-flow conditions. Largemouth bass are active in shaded spots, especially early and late in the day—try topwater frogs, chatterbaits, or spinnerbaits. In tidal areas, Chesapeake Channa are hitting soft frogs and chatterbaits near grass beds. Meanwhile, an alligator gar—likely an aquarium release—was recently caught in the Bush River, marking a rare sighting for Maryland.
