Garrett County Community Action announces 2026 dates for its popular Homeownership Education & Finance Class. The free workshops cover every essential step of the homebuying process, from selecting a realtor, identifying insurance, and navigating financing, with topics such as credit analysis, lender underwriting criteria, and much more, all designed to equip future homeowners with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. Scheduled workshops are February 2 & 23, April 6 & 20, June 1 & 15, August 3 & 10, and October 5 & 19. All sessions begin at 1:00 PM for approximately three hours each at Community Action's Oakland offices, led by Nick Fratz-Orr of Railey Realty, Amanda Lewis of Healy Insurance Group, and April Jones of First United Bank & Trust. April is recognized as the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Month, a nationwide effort to prevent opioid misuse and keep communities safe by encouraging the proper disposal of unused or expired medications. The Garrett County Health Department, in partnership with the Maryland State Police, will be hosting two local take-back events this month: Tuesday, April 7, 2026, Mobile Market @ Grantsville Library, 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM Saturday, April 11, 2026, Garrett County Health Fair @ Carc, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Safe disposal drop boxes are also available year-round at Oakland Town Police, Garrett County Sheriff’s Office, and McHenry State Police Barracks. Proper disposal of unused medications plays a vital role in preventing prescription drugs from being misused. Opioid misuse often begins with medications found at home, and take-back programs provide a simple way for residents to protect themselves and their loved ones. Last year, the state of Maryland safely disposed of more than 22,000 pounds of medication, while Garrett County residents contributed 166 pounds of medication through local take-back efforts. She has been diagnosed with nonalcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, which has in turn caused multiple organ failures, and she is now in need of a liver transplant. Oakland Golf Club’s Men’s League
Oakland Golf Club’s Men’s League tees off Wednesdays at 5:30 PM, offering a fun and competitive weekly play for golfers of all skill levels. Players can sign up as a single or as part of a foursome, with a season-long points race for cash prizes, weekly hole contests, and both net and gross team prizes. Weekly formats keep things fresh, including scrambles, shambles, and specialty play nights. Entry is $10 for members and $40 for non-members, making it a great way to enjoy the game, friendly competition, and camaraderie all season long.

Ride with Deep Creek Adventure Bureau! The wonderful group of women bike riders are back at it with regular womens+ casual group trail and mountain bike rides, and all abilities are welcome. As the first rides after a long winter season, the group will be taking it slow. Meet at 5:15 PM at The Dip (39.464126, -79.443842), with wheels down at 5:30 PM and a return around 7:15 PM. This is a chance to meet other riders, stop along the way to reinforce skills, and take photos of bikes and wildflowers.
