In the picturesque landscape of Garrett County, nestled amidst the Allegheny Mountains, a unique event is poised to make its debut on Thursday, February 22nd at 2:00 PM. It’s the Community Dunk, an initiative driven by the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce and generously sponsored by the Oak-Mar Motel & 3rd Street Diner and Casselman Creamery.
What sets this event apart is its emphasis on fostering local community engagement. Unlike the bustling Saturday Dunks, the Community Dunk promises a more intimate affair, echoing the spirit of the close-knit communities that dot Garrett County.
“This first annual event is a testament to our commitment to celebrating our local talent and supporting our athletes and Unified® teammates of Special Olympics Maryland – Garrett County,” remarked a spokesperson for the Chamber of Commerce.

There are quite a lot of interesting things to do in the Garrett County area. Even though it’s cold outside, we don’t have to turn into couch potatoes. The East Coast is a real beauty when it comes to the changing seasons and winter is no exception.
Here are a few suggestions of things to do or where to go around Deep Creek Lake, MD.
Joy of Christmas Show
The “Joy of Christmas Light Show” is a nightly extravaganza of lights and music, set to captivate audiences this festive season. Starting from the Friday after Thanksgiving Day, visitors can immerse themselves in a radiant display of over 40,000 lights, synchronized to a curated selection of music each evening.
Each show begins at the top of the hour, offering a spectacular visual feast that visitors can enjoy outdoors or from the comfort of their vehicles, tuning in through their radio (on station 87.9 FM). This year, the celebration takes an exciting turn with the introduction of a new interactive outdoor dance floor, inviting guests to become part of the magic.

Ice Skating at Grantsville Town Park
Garrett County’s only ice rink is located outdoors in the Grantsville Town Park. Advance admission purchases are encouraged, although drop-ins are welcome. The facility provides rentals for skates, helmets, and skate aids at varying prices. Afterschool Skate sessions run Monday through Friday from 4-6 PM, priced at $5 per skater with included rental skates. The rink, closed on Wednesdays, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day, is available for group rentals and parties, offering a 90-minute private ice session, a basic skating lesson, and facility use for $250. Only those actively skating need to pay for admission, and public skates are restricted to scheduled times. Dressing warmly is recommended for the outdoor rink, with caution about potential weather-related cancellations. The schedule can be checked on their Facebook page, and reservations can be made online for public skate sessions. Also, JTF will also have a concession stand on site with a selection of a hot items, chips, cookies, candy, hot chocolate, coffee, hot tea, and soda.

Cold weather riding offers a unique experience. However, it’s crucial to understand how to manage the cold effectively. In this guide, we will explore the essentials of riding in cold conditions, focusing on body response, gear selection, and the amazing world of fat bikes.
Understanding Your Body in the Cold
In cold conditions, your body prioritizes protecting vital organs by directing blood flow to the core. This natural response can leave your extremities, like hands and feet, feeling much colder.
Medical Considerations
Raynaud’s Syndrome: A condition affecting blood flow to certain parts of your body, often noticeable in fingers and toes.
Hypothermia: Occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce, causing a dangerously low body temperature.
Frostbite: The freezing of skin and underlying tissues, commonly on fingers, toes, nose, and ears.
Nerve Damage: Prolonged exposure to cold can lead to permanent nerve damage, often in extremities. A result of frostbite.
Route Planning and Moisture Management
Choose routes wisely, avoiding long descents which can lead to cooling down. Opt for sheltered paths like wooded areas to minimize wind chill. Moisture management is key. Try to avoid sweating excessively.
Plan your rides with stops at coffee shops or similar places where you can warm up, refuel, and hydrate.
Fuel and Hydration in Cold Weather
Regular intake of food is essential. Aim for about 150 calories every half hour. For freezing water bottles, a splash of whisky can prevent freezing and store them upside down on your bike. If using a camelbak, blow back the water to prevent the hose from freezing.

On Saturday, December 16, 2023, the 8th Annual Police Providing Presents event took place in Garrett County. This event was made possible through the collaboration of volunteers from four law enforcement agencies in Garrett County, along with the Garrett County Department of Social Services, Garrett County Board of Education and Garrett County Health Department.
Although this event may have different names across the country, its purpose remains the same. The event aimed to provide selected children from Garrett County Schools with the opportunity to spend the day with members of various law enforcement agencies, Maryland State Police, Garrett County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland Natural Resource Police and the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The event kicked off with the officers picking up their assigned partners for the day and together they went shopping for gifts at the Oakland Walmart. Later, a luncheon with various activities was held at the Garrett County Fairgrounds. These activities included demonstrations of fire trucks and ambulances, as well as ornament making, cookie decorating, and interactive games. Volunteers wrapped the purchased gifts during these activities, ensuring that the children could take them home to their families.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Garrett County Department of Social Services for their partnership since the inception of Police Providing Presents, as well as their continued support for the program each year. Additionally, we extend our thanks to the Garrett County Public Schools for their assistance in selecting the children who participated in this event. Public lands in the United States offer a diverse range of opportunities for hunters, but they also come with various regulations and access points to note.
Locally, the Maryland-owned lands typically comprise State Parks, Wildlife Areas (WA), or Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). The rules for hunting in these areas can vary significantly. County-owned lands have various access for hunting. Also, there are private lands available for hunting.
It’s when hunting season is in outdoor recreation users need to be respectful and ensure they are wearing blaze orange clothing and accessories when hiking or biking or bird-watching on the trails.
Here’s what we could find on the local (forested) public lands and the hunting policy for each:

The first ever National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) eastern regional competition took place on November 10-12 at Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area in the northeast corner of Maryland. The weekend events included racing, adventure rides, GRIT rides (girls riding together), games, skill challenges and much more. The race on Saturday included the top high school mountain bikers from NY, FL, NC, SC, NJ, DE, WV, PA, MD, VA, and OH. The race course had a balanced mixture of tough climbs and sweet downhills, technical roots and smooth single track! It was a challenging course, as riders had to draw on their fitness and grit for the gradual climb up from the 1.5 mile to 2.3 mile marker. After the long climb racers were rewarded with two miles of fast and flowy singletrack and a long grassy field climb to the finish line.
Maryland riders competed this fall on many different courses, and this was the culmination of and first ever chance for cyclists in the high school division to compete against riders from ten other states. Local student athletes Ashlynn Anderson and Nathan Aldridge, members of the Garrett County Composite MTB Team qualified and competed in the event. Ashlynn qualified in the JV girls division where she finished her 3 lap race in 14th place with a time of 1:11:25.90. Anderson had an amazing biking season. All her hard work, determination, extra effort training in the off season and pushing herself at every practice had paid off. She finished the MICL Girls HS1 race series in 3rd place. Nathan raced in the challenging varsity age group. He not only battled the race course, the fastest division of racers, but also a bike mechanical with shifting issues. He was able to finish 4 laps to take 49th place with a time of 1:13:3. Though it was not the result he was striving for, it was still a very impressive capstone to his senior high school season. Over the last three seasons (no races were held in 2020) Aldridge earned a spot on the podium (Top 5) 3 times among the state’s fastest mountain bikers. He had 4 top 10 finishes and 2 top 15 finishes. He was 6th place in the MICL Varsity overall points series.

The Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League (MICL) held its Season 6 Finals in the Pickall Area of the Patapsco Valley State Park November 4-5th. The Garrett County Composite Team competed against 24 other Maryland mountain biking teams, pitting over 500 student athletes at the event. The race course was on the Schools Out Loop trail, which was created with the MICL racers in mind. The course was 4 miles of mostly singletrack trail with barely 250’ of climb per lap. The first half of the course was full of flow, but several tricky off-camber downhill turns, challenged every rider to keep their bikes from washing out on the dirt surface. The middle of the course followed a powerline climb which allowed many riders a safer passing zone. After a fast 1/2 mile climb, the racers darted back into the singletrack trail that had the bikers feeling like they were on a smooth roller coaster weaving through the autumn woods. The back section of the course was overlooking the Patapsco River and challenged riders with rocky sections and log crossings, then one more hill climb to the finish line.
As a team, the Coyotes finished 12th at Pickall and 9th in the 2023 overall MICL series. Individually, 3 Coyotes raced their way to the podium. Aspen Smith took 2nd place in the Girls Middle School Grade 7 Division. Her two lap race time was 46 minutes and 26 seconds. Senior Ellie Hudnall finished her high mountain biking career by pedaling to a 5th place on the podium in the High School Girls 2 Division. Her time was 57 minutes and 43 seconds. Allison Thrush also claimed a 5th spot finish in the High School Girls 3 Division with a time of 53 minutes and 6 seconds.
In the High School Girls 1 Division, Iris Dubanski finished with an impressive 7th place time of 51 minutes and 36 seconds, while Ashlynn Anderson overcame mechanical problems and a flat tire to complete the race in 65 minutes and 5 seconds for a 12th place finish. Kara Opfer finished her first ever High School Girls Division 3 race in 16th, with a time of 66 minutes and 51 seconds. In the Middle School Girls Grade 7 Division, Mary Thrush finished with a time of 55 minutes and 29 seconds for a 7th place finish, while Ezra Alls completed her two laps with a time of 61 minutes and 53 seconds which put her in 9th place. In the Middle School Girl 8 Division, Ava Anderson took 7th place with a time of 55 minutes and 18 seconds, while Tessa Dubansky finished in 16th place.
On the boys side, Senior Nathan Aldridge finished in 10th place, battling complications to complete four laps in just over 70 minutes in the Varsity Division. He finished his impressive high school MICL career in 6th place in the Boys Varsity overall points series. Junior Jackson Hordubay finished in 10th place in the High School Boys 1 Division, with a time of 56 minutes and 12 seconds for three laps. In the High School Boys 3 Division, Cooper Haley finished in 13th place with a time of 46 minutes and 4 seconds, Andrew SanJulian finished in 16th place with a time of 46 minutes and 35 seconds, and Henry Faulkner finished in 17 place with a time of 46 minutes and 42 seconds. Rounding out the boys was Cam Hudnall who placed 6th in the Middle School Boys grade 8 Division, completing his two laps in 42 minutes and 16 seconds.

Maryland boasts diverse habitats that support a wide range of plant and animal species, from majestic mountains to coastal wetlands. While many people think of larger animals like deer, foxes, or turkeys when it comes to wildlife, reptiles and amphibians often go unnoticed. However, Maryland is home to a remarkable array of these fascinating creatures. The state hosts 20 species and sub-species of frogs and toads, 19 species and sub-species of turtles and tortoises, 27 different snakes, and six types of lizards. Unfortunately, due to various challenges, several of these species are experiencing population declines.
To address these concerns, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Wildlife and Heritage Service maintains a comprehensive list of rare, threatened, and endangered species throughout the state. Species with populations falling below specific thresholds are categorized as “Endangered” (at a very high risk of extinction), “Threatened” (at high risk), or “Watchlist” (at moderate risk).
Here, we highlight four species of particular concern in Garrett County, Maryland. If you are a woodland owner interested in developing or enhancing wildlife habitats, it may be worth investigating whether your property could benefit these species.
Timber Rattlesnake: It is crucial to note that this snake is venomous and possesses a rattle, making it the only Maryland snake with this feature. The Timber Rattlesnake prefers upland forested areas with rocky outcrops and talus slopes. It is active during the day in spring and fall but becomes nocturnal during summer to avoid excessive heat. Maryland considers the Timber Rattlesnake a Watchlist species, found from Frederick to Garrett County.
Northern Coal Skink: As a member of the lizard family, the skink is represented by four species in Maryland. Among them, the Northern Coal Skink is the sole species currently listed as Endangered. It has been observed exclusively in Garrett and western Allegany counties, with no recent records of sightings. This skink inhabits moist wooded areas near springs or creeks and seeks shelter in rocky outcrops or under leaf litter.
Also on the list across the state of Maryland are the bog turtle and barking treefrog.
By raising awareness and taking conservation measures, we can help protect these endangered reptiles and amphibians that contribute to our area’s rich biodiversity.
