“Maryland in a Day” Tour Kicks Off at Deep Creek Lake

Deep Creek Lake served as the spectacular starting point for the “Maryland in a Day” adventure, a whirlwind journey celebrating National Travel & Tourism Week and showcasing the diversity of Maryland’s scenic byways. Organized by the Maryland Tourism Coalition and led by Baltimore personality Chris Riehl, the tour spans from the mountains of Western Maryland to the historic Pimlico Race Course—all in a single day.

Local tourism leaders and community representatives gathered bright and early at Silver Tree Marina in McHenry to welcome the team and spotlight the Deep Creek Lake Centennial (DCL100), a yearlong celebration honoring the lake’s 100th anniversary in 2025.

Members of the DCL100 Committee—including Missy Gralish, Chris Nichols, and Sarah Myers—joined Lisa Ratliff of Wisp Resort and guest Jean Hazlett-Bitner to meet with Chris Riehl and Nick Hursley, highlighting Garrett County as a gateway to outdoor adventure, heritage tourism, and year-round recreation.

“Deep Creek Lake has been a cherished destination for generations,” said Myers. “This centennial year is a chance to reflect on its legacy, while also showcasing the incredible people, places, and small towns that make Western Maryland so special.”

As the first stop on the “Maryland in a Day” itinerary, Deep Creek Lake leads the way along the Mountain Maryland Scenic Byway. From here, the journey continues to notable landmarks including Casselman River Bridge State Park, the National Road Monument in Cumberland, Antietam National Battlefield, covered bridges in Frederick County, charming Main Streets in Westminster, and finally, the historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
