On May 16–17, 2025, the town of Grantsville, Maryland, came alive with the vibrant celebrations of the National Road Festival. This annual event honors the historic National Road, America’s first federally funded highway, and offers a weekend filled with community activities, historical reenactments, and local artistry.
The festivities commenced on Friday evening with a Wagon Train Documentary and Historic Monologues at the Little Crossings Chapel. Attendees were transported back in time, gaining insights into the lives of early travelers and the significance of the National Road in America’s expansion.
Saturday’s events were a testament to Grantsville’s rich cultural tapestry:

Town-Wide Yard Sale: From 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, residents participated in a community-wide yard sale, offering treasures and trinkets that attracted both locals and visitors.

Live Performances: The Spruce Forest Artisan Village pavilion hosted the Snaggy Mountain Slackards from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, while the Town Park resonated with melodies from the Simple Gifts ensemble between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM.

Artistic Endeavors: A community Barn Quilt art project took place at the Town Park from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, allowing participants to contribute to a collaborative piece of art that reflects the town’s heritage.

Artisan Demonstrations: Visitors explored the Spruce Forest Artisan Village, engaging with local artisans specializing in blacksmithing, leatherworking, woodturning, weaving, pottery, and metalsmithing.
The annual festival celebrates the historical significance of the National Road (Route 40) in Grantsville and showcases the town’s commitment, through the Arts & Entertainment District, to preserving and promoting its cultural heritage.
