The Strategic Facilities Committee assembled by the Garrett County Public Schools is requesting community feedback. A total of three sessions will be held to provide community members with an opportunity to offer their views on the preliminary recommendations of the Committee, which was appointed by the Board of Education in March 2019. The Committee will deliver final recommendations to the Board in November 2019. Since the community feedback sessions are critical to the success of the Committee’s work, they will be recorded so that no input, comments or questions are overlooked during the development of the final recommendations. Each listening session will be preceded by a brief presentation on the Committee’s preliminary recommendations.

The ONE COMMUNITY FEEDBACK SESSION REMAINS and will be held between 6:30 and 8:30 pm at the following location:

  • Thursday, September 19: Northern Middle School Cafeteria, 371 Pride Parkway, Accident, MD

Even if you do not have children in school, the Board encourages community members to attend and share their feedback regarding the preliminary recommendations of the Strategic Facilities Committee.

Surgeon General Advises Against Marijuana Use by Adolescents and Pregnant Women

The Surgeon General recently issued a warning against marijuana use by adolescents and pregnant women because of the negative effects of marijuana on the developing brain.

“No amount of marijuana use during pregnancy or adolescence is known to be safe,” Surgeon General Jerome Adams said in his advisory. “Until and unless more is known about the long-term impact, the safest choice for pregnant women and adolescents is not to use marijuana.” The report points to recent increases in access to marijuana and in its increased potency, along with misperceptions of the safety of marijuana, for endangering the nation’s youth.

Marijuana grown today contains varying levels of THC, the component responsible for euphoria and intoxication. The THC concentration in commonly cultivated marijuana plants increased three-fold between 1995 and 2014, from 4% to 12%, with marijuana sold in dispensaries in some states containing THC levels between 17.7% and 23.2%, and even much higher for some concentrated products.

“No matter what your opinion is about marijuana use, the Surgeon General’s Advisory confirms there is no safe level of marijuana for pregnant women or for youth,” said Health Officer Bob Stephens. “Our youth’s developing brains are too valuable not to protect them from the damaging effects of not only marijuana, but any drugs.”

The advisory is intended to raise awareness of the known and potential harms to developing brains, posed by the increasing availability of highly potent marijuana in multiple, concentrated forms. “These harms are costly to individuals and to our society, impacting mental health and educational achievement and raising the risks of addiction and misuse of other substances,” the advisory continues.

Visit http://bit.ly/brainadvisory to read the Surgeon General’s complete advisory. For more information about marijuana prevention visit SpreadTheFacts.com or call the Garrett County Health Department at 301-334-7730 or 301-895-3111.

Maryland Air BnB Hosts Earned over $33 Million this Summer

Airbnb announced today that its Maryland host community earned a combined $33.6 million in supplemental income while welcoming approximately 188,000 guest arrivals to the state this summer, from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day.

“Throughout the summer of 2019, we have continued to see the significant, positive impact of our short-term rental community across Maryland. With more guest arrivals this summer than ever before, hosts and small businesses have been able to enjoy the opportunities created by an expanded tourism economy,” said Kelley Gossett, Head of Mid-Atlantic Public Policy for Airbnb. “As we mark yet another historic summer and look ahead, we hope to keep working with State government, as well as towns and cities statewide, to ensure short-term rentals can continue to play a strong role in the entire Maryland economy.”

The top five city destinations for Airbnb guests to Maryland this summer were, in order: Baltimore, Annapolis, Silver Spring, Oakland and Hyattsville.

The top five origin cities for Airbnb guests to Maryland were, in order: Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Maryland; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New York City, New York; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This demonstrates the popularity of Airbnb among Maryland residents looking to explore other parts of their own state. As of July 2019, approximately 1.1 million Maryland residents used Airbnb to travel over the past year.

In addition to helping hosts earn important supplemental income, Airbnb also helps generate revenue for local economies around the world. According to an Airbnb survey of more than 35,000 responses from our host and guest community in the United States**:

  • 92 percent of Airbnb hosts say they recommend restaurants and cafes to guests.

  • 56 percent of Airbnb hosts say they recommend cultural activities such as museums, festivals, and historical sites to guests.

  • 55 percent of Airbnb hosts say hosting has helped them afford their homes.

  • On average, Airbnb guests say 41 percent of their spending occurs in the neighborhood where they stay.

Unlike other business models that siphon the money they generate out of communities, Airbnb activity directly benefits the communities our hosts call home. Since Airbnb was founded, hosts keep 97 percent and have earned over $65 billion sharing their homes that many use to pay the bills and pursue their passions.

What follows is an overview of summer 2019 guest arrivals and total host income, broken down by county.

Monday September 9

There’s a slight chance of rain before 11:00 am today, then a chance of showers between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2:00 pm. Overall, there’s a 30% chance of rain with a high near 71. There will be a light and variable wind with a low temperature Monday night of 57 degrees. Hopefully there will be more sun than clouds and the rain will hold off.

I can’t believe it is “deep” into September already.  Where did the summer go? There were still a good number of boats and personal watercraft on the lake yesterday cruising around and taking advantage of the great weather late-season.

My wife Jean and I were volunteer pourers at the Art, Wine and Beer event on Saturday. Lots of engaged and happy people sampling various beverages and checking out the art offerings. We always enjoy interacting with the attendees. Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) and HART for Animals and all the volunteers did a great job as usual.  I hope these two very worthy non-profits also did well financially as I know it is a very major undertaking that takes many months of planning and action.

Sarah also volunteered.  Here’s a photo of her (on the right) and her (soon-to-be) sister in law Jenna Fadely from HART channeling their inner Rosie the Riveter at the American Association of University Women (AAUW) booth at the event.

As the summer season winds down, don’t forget to keep in mind all of the other, non-lake specific activities available to us all in Garrett County.  Here’s a downrange photo of Lisa Schoberg from San Diego (in silhouette) target shooting at the New Germany State Park range this past week. Fall is a great time to try something different “on the mountain.”

New Germany State Park Practice Range

Speaking of something perhaps a little different on the mountain, I think Swallow Falls State Park is worth a trip even if you have been there recently.  Every time I visit I experience the trails and the falls in a different light, both literally and figuratively. On a recent visit just last week, the falls were great and the park was beautiful.  Based on the comments, visitors and locals were also impressed. Even my little grandson Andy was engaged in exploring the paths and playing with things he found (and getting dirty). Here’s a photo of Andy and his Nana on the path near Muddy Falls. Check it out and be sure to take your out-of-town visitors there in any season.
