Andrew Peterson shared this shoreline view from the boat. I love when the fall colors start to pop but it’s still warm enough for the boat!

The Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line is an anonymous reporting app (in the App Store and Google Play) and phone line (Dial 1-833-MD-B-SAFE) used to report threats to the safety and/or well-being of our public school students. Students, parents, faculty, staff, and members of communities throughout Maryland may use this anonymous, app- and web-based reporting system to share their concerns, such as:

  • Mental health crises
  • Bullying
  • School and community violence
  • Drug activity
  • Abuse
  • Harassment
  • Other issues affecting our Maryland students

Remember tomorrow the age to buy cigarettes, cigars, and vaping devices increases 21 years old in Maryland.

Also, tomorrow, there is a new owner in town: Brenneman’s Store will now be Country Roads General Store.

There is a good bit of discussion regarding the water levels of Deep Creek Lake. The Yough relies on releases for thriving wildlife and recreation. But, if lake levels drop too low, some Deep Creek Lake docks get trapped by dry land. A public informational hearing has been scheduled on October 15, 2019 at 3:00 PM, at the Auditorium of Garrett College to discuss the renewal of the Brookfield Renewable permit to operate the dam.

Friday September 27, Saturday September 28, Sunday September 29

The Bark in the Park 5k Race is tomorrow to benefit the Deep Creek Lion’s club’s off-leash dog park in McHenry. The route will utilize the recently opened Meshach Browning trail system.

Lend a Hand for Public Lands! is tomorrow at New Germany State Park — Join staff for a volunteer work day in celebration of National Public Lands Day. They will construct and install a bulletin board at the trailhead and paint signposts. (best suited for ages 12 and up)

Maryland Health Department reaches out to retailers across the state preparing for change in tobacco sales law

The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) is reaching out to more than 4,000 randomly selected licensed tobacco retailers across the state to help them prepare for a change in the legal sales age for tobacco products. Starting Oct. 1, 2019, Maryland will join 17 other states and more than 485 cities and counties across the nation in increasing the minimum legal sales age to 21 for all tobacco products, including electronic smoking devices such as e-cigarettes, vapes, pod-based devices and e-liquids.

This change in the law comes as Maryland, as well as 37 other states, is dealing with an outbreak of severe lung illnesses associated with vaping. As of Sept. 24, there were 20 such cases reported in Maryland. In addition to providing educational materials, MDH is surveying retailers to seek input on what additional resources they need to assist them with today’s rapidly changing tobacco landscape.

“We want to help tobacco retailers comply with the new law,” said MDH Secretary Robert R. Neall. “They play a critical role in creating a healthier Maryland by keeping tobacco products out of the hands of Maryland youth.”

Earlier this month, MDH launched the statewide campaign, “21 or none.” New materials including “minimum age of sale” signs – compliant with the law – and a toolkit to train staff on new procedures for checking ID are available for download on MDH’s Responsible Tobacco Retailer website, www.NoTobaccoSalesToMinors.com.

Mike attended the Garrett Mentors Fundraiser Dinner-Dance Saturday evening and reports it was a great event. The event was sold-out with great food (from Dutch’s), great music (from The Remedy) and lots of families enjoying the activities, which included hayrides, dancing, and a nice silent auction.

We want to give a shout-out to one of our avid readers, Margaret Ann Coulter from Pittsburgh, whom Mike just met this weekend.  She has been coming to the Deep Creek Lake area for decades and even commutes for the day to experience the lake and take her boat out, hoping to someday own a home here. And, she loves the Deep Creek Times. She also sells scented candles and she was so nice, we said we would mention her candles in the Daily Notes – Check her site out!

The winner for the Mountain Coaster vouchers we said we would give away is Patti Mauer! CONGRATS!
